What happened to the ballparks in the 80's and 90's "NO PEPPER" warnings behind or near home plate?

Just a fad that went away? I know Candlestick and I think Montreal also had it.

"Some ballparks have banned pepper games because of the danger of balls landing in the stands and injuring spectators or because its concentrated play damages the grass on the field. Many ballparks display "NO PEPPER" warnings behind or near home plate." From wiki

And that's why you don't see the signs anymore.

Google it.

I hated it in little league. I guess the coaches did it to remove the fear of the ball from the young players. It just made me more scared.

Drill for quickening reflexes. Toss ball at hitter at close range and he hits it back to you.

BTW, we had a serious accident in Shreveport with our Giant's minor league team years ago during pre game warm ups.

They had a contest for your kid to be a bat boy. Bad idea. The kid who won was not paying attention and walked into a batter taking practice swings before entering the cage for batting practice. I think the kid lost a kidney.

I wonder if the signs are disappearing because newer parks have more foul territory so the chances of a ball getting into the stands and hurting someone is much less.

Wrigley, Shea, some of those places there wasn't much room at all in foul territory.

also, the groundskeepers take much better care of the grounds and don't want players playing around on the same patches of grass
