Don't have any expectations of him looking this way. Just thought this article did a good job of laying out the options rule-wise:

Malik McDowell Can Attend Michigan State if Parents Won't Sign

I'm pretty sure something similar happened with Chris Jackson, bball player for Lsu back in the day. His parents were against him coming to Lsu.

Man, he still hasn't signed?

I was just wondering 5 minutes ago what the deal was with him.

Don't they want him to stay away from his friends? Has he been in trouble before? I'd that's the case, I kind of understand.

I don't either, all this drama should be handled in the living room long prior to sending in a LOI.

It's damn near impossible to know the truth, but it seems to me that the mother doesn't believe her son is making the choice for the right reasons. She wants him to make a mature choice considering professional development, education to fall back on and social considerations. What she says is that her son just tells her that he just feels more comfortable there. That's not enough for her and that's her right as a parent of a 17 year old. She also seems to have a problem with the position coach at MSU as she is not confident that he will be able to develop him (don't ask me why. her words).

The rumor is that his mother overheard him joking with a MSU player and perhaps a MSU coach that he would never have to go to class at State while on a visit. Both of his parents have also said they are worried some of his bad apple friends will follow him if he stays in state and they dont want that.

So Malik McDowell will have to pay out of his own pocket for summer classes in order to work out with the team if neither of his parents sign the NLI. Assuming he doesn't attend the summer classes, not only will he be far behind all of the other 2014 signees, MSU will also get very bad press as the school that went against the wishes of parents in order to nab a highly rated recruit. There is very little to win in this scenario and they may have to consider cutting bait if they know for sure that the parents absolutely refuse to sign.

Yeah I haven't heard of him getting in trouble, but apparently he has some bad influences they want him to get away from.
I can't blame parents for wanting that. At this point though, they are probably doing more harm than good.

The former supports her comments regarding education, and if the coach was involved, why she seems to not like him so much. The latter bad apple thing seems suspect to me since she seems to okay if he ended up in Ann Arbor which is closer than E. Lansing.

I think they want him out of state. I know they like UM's academics though.

As have been somewhat stated:

1. His mom does not like MSU at all. People are saying it's about skipping classes. She has said, I believe, something happened when she was an a visit with him that rubbed her the wrong way

2. His dad likes FSU a lot I've heard. In fact, I think if his parents had the full say, he would be a Nole right now

3. OSU was only in the conversation because it is a good compromise. Somewhat close to home, but OOS and he can get away from Michigan.

4. I feel bad for the kid, since his heart is at MSU. I just worry that he would transfer/have problems if he didn't go where he wanted. Not saying he would, but the motivation may not be the same

it sounds like his parents are acting in Malik's best interest.

Anytime anything like this comes up I always read post saying the parents should just let the kid pick where he wants to go and that is that. Well I would be willing to bet most of those post come from people without kids. As a parent I would definately let my son chose where he wants to go unless there was a legitmate reason not to. There is a reason the NCAA makes these kids get their parents signature. I am not saying his parents shouldn't let him go to MSU because I don't know why they don't want him to but I do know as a parent if I felt in my heart my son shouldn't be at a school and there was a legit reason why I felt like that, then my job as his parent is to try and come up with a compromise. If that means I don't sign the papers until we all come to an agreement then that is what I would do. If things would happen to go bad at MSU and he gets kicked out or even arrested who do you think he is going to run to for help? The people who have to sign off on those papers, that's who.

i'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. there is a reason why you have to be 21 to sign a loi. some of you act like the kid should just pick where he wants to go and parents rubber stamp it. if so, eliminate loi and let kid go whereever he wants.
