So I changed my filing status from Single to married and my check went up about 10%. As much as I love getting more money, how does it make any sense that just because I decided to get married that I am entitled to more of my money than when I was single? And then if I decide to have kids, I will get to keep even more of my own money. Can anyone give me a good reason as to why I should be entitled to pay less in taxes just because I DECIDED to get married and will eventually have kids?

And no I am not complaining and no I am not going to willingly give them more money. I just think its bullshite that single people are penalized.

It would make sense, if it were true.

Check back with me when your theoretical children finally move out and begin supporting themselves. Let me know how that tax break works out for you.

FTR, I am all for a flat income tax, but there is a reason for the tax breaks.

People that get married before they have kids have a lower rate of poverty. As a society we need to reproduce so that someone will take care of us one day and continue making our country strong. The government has seen it fit to encourage decisions that help society as a whole through the form of tax breaks.

The only thing that changed on my paycheck is that I went from Single to Married. I am not sure what else it could be.

I agree. Reminds me of car insurance on my stepson. When he turned 25 I thought his insurance would go down like mine did at that age. I call State Farm and I'm informed why his rate didn't go down. Answer - the age has been raised to 30. Question - why? Her answer was they figured single men drove more than married men (chasing women I assume) thus resulting in more accidents.

I told her that was hogwash. The guys I worked with - more married men were chasing tail than single guys. She chuckled and said for me to have a nice day.

The govt gives incentives to families. Its not hard to understand.

Same reason that they let you deduct your mortgage interest from your income taxes. The govt wants to support good things like being married and owning a home.

If the government is needing more money, then yes it is. To be fair, shouldn't a single man making 70 grand a year pay the same tax as a married man making the same amount?

Because marriage is a stabilizing institution. It lowers crime and fights poverty. It's good for the people in it and good for the society it that exists in. Marriage requires you to have a long-term commitment to someone other than yourself. Those types of commitments promote stability and yes, even serve as hedge against tyrannical government.

That is all before you even add kids to the mix. Once you add compare single parent households to married households, marriages become even more important.

So take your extra money, save it, and eventually buy a house with it. Live the dream!

Way back when people who wrote the tax code decided that in order to encourage people to get married, they wrote in privileges for married couples.

You can argue about the merits of doing this, but that was the reasoning at the time.

The tax code has long been used as a tool by government to encourage a certain activity in society.

It really takes some backwards-arse thinking to arrive at that answer.

The fact that you are even having to say the words "entitled to keeping my own money" is a tragedy.
