Checking out my 401k performance and it is in the negative so far this year by a small amount. This will be my first full year with a 401k. Is this pretty normal at the beginning of the year and is anyone else experiencing this?

There is no "normal" when it comes to short term.

Yes.

Nothing to do with your first year. It has to do with the market dropping overall in the last couple of months. Don't second guess yourself about investing. It will work out in the long run.

Yeah brah, the Dow has shed close to 1,200 points since the beginning of the year. You are in the norm for this year I would assume.

Last year, however, anything short of 10% and you missed the boat.

Does your company match anything? If so you at least have that.

I contributed 1/3 of Roth Max after monday.

Can't worry about short term downswings, but they can often be opportunities.

Yes, company matches a good %. There is no chance I will stop contributing to this or my Roth, I know it will pay off in the long run. And I know this has nothing to do with it being my first year, I was just stating this because I didn't know if this was the norm early in the year.

Here is a theory for how the remainder of the year may go.

I started out contributing in '07 and caught the economic downturn and for I think a year or two I had less in my 401k account than what I contributed. Now those assets are up $8K or $9K.

In my current 401K, using only my contribution as the invested amount (since I didn't pay for my employer's match), I had a 79% return on my 401K since '10.

Stay the course and you'll do well; contribute to it regardless of whether the market is doing well or not and always get the maximum match from your employer (free money/assets/return on your investment). You'll be happy at the end of the day if you're consistent and let it compound until retirement.
