One thing it means is the white perch are getting ready to move up. Usually this happens within 3 to 4 weeks after the martins first arrive.

My grandpa always had 6-8 Purple Martin houses in his back yard. He would sit on his patio every evening drinking beer and shooting starlings with his Benjamin to keep them out of the Martin houses.

You sure do spill a lot of beans.

ETA: Guess I need to tell pops to put his house up, if it's not already.

I have calendars dating from 1970-2004 with my grandfather's notes on each day about how many came in each day, and when they left. Weather notes, and other anecdotal things. You could not buy them from me for $20 million dollars.

Just trying to educate some of these boys. My pow pow died with much of this type knowledge that I wish I knew.

I'm not telling them where just little general notes about things to watch for.

Kind of like don't plant cotton until you see the African-American ladies sitting flat on the ground while fishing. If they are still sitting on buckets it is far too early to plant cotton.

The ladies will not sit on the ground while fishing unless the ground temperature has risen to around 70 degrees. Laugh all you want but until you see them sitting on the ground it is too early to plant cotton.

People would think I was bonkers if they knew all of things I'm watching for this time of year.

I saw some robins while walking the dogs on weekend – it was about 25 (better than -10) so I was pretty f’n happy canuck. On that note I hear there are robins that stay all winter now so maybe I was SOL. And then that f’n rodent saw his shadow ……
