how do you go about getting them to come to a new house. I was planning to put one up this year.

Make sure the area where you put the house is not right next to any trees and has a clear fly-way. Purchase some Martin decoys and place on housing or on perching poles installed on the house. I think Home Depot and Lowe's has them. Borrow or download a audio track called "Dawn Song". Play this outside near the Martin housing. If any Martins are in the area, they will come in your direction.
It is pretty easy to get them down in Louisiana. Once you got them, they and their offspring will likely return each year.
You need to control sparrows and starlings. They will take over the housing and destroy Martin eggs.
Good luck.

I've said this before, but it's pretty surreal. I had mounted mine to a 22' rigid pipe which we were standing up and locking down. Before we were finished I had martins circling.
They haven't come yet, hope they show up soon.

I have calendars dating from 1970-2004 with my grandfather's notes on each day about how many came in each day, and when they left. Weather notes, and other anecdotal things. You could not buy them from me for $20 million dollars.
man, that is a family treasure...

Right about the fly zone.
I think they also like a wire stretched across the open area about twenty feet off the ground so they have something to sit on.
Seems early for the scouts to show up in central MS, but maybe not long now.

Thanks for the heads up. I need to clean out the house and set it back up.

I know you are supposed to clean the houses...but my lazy father in law never does and his houses are packed with them every year...whats up with that?

I remember martins circling as I was putting up my very first martin pole years ago. These birds LOVE gourds. Make sure you hang the gourds so that they swing back and forth when the birds land on them. I am just guessing that a swinging gourd is more attractive because it might be more difficult for owls to land on a swinging gourd. I haven't had any martins since a rat snake climbed my pole several years ago. Maybe they will resume nesting this year. I've watched owls and hawks chase them over the years, but really enjoy the evening roosting ritual. Try to keep the pole in an open area to discourage predators from setting up ambushes close to the nesting colony.

Is all that realy needed? I've always just put up a house in an open area and they come.

Bump....I've had as many as five in the yard in the last few days, two even chased the Jack Russell's out of their space.
