So this guy was a Michigan alum and decides he's going to leave to go to Arizona State and announces same before the NCAAT and is told to resign then his assistant coaches his team to a national championship. Seems odd. Was there something else going on in the background?

Why would you let a lame duck coach the team in the tournament?

LSU shouldn't have let Saban coach in the bowl game. But LSU fans were too busy being down on their knees to care. All we wanted was one more night with Nick Saban.

what I mean is why would a Michigan alum leave UM basketball for ASU in the first place.

that's what I'm trying to get to the bottom of. The move just makes zero sense.

Frieder said he was frustrated with the direction of the program at the time. Charter flights had been cut, and he didn't feel as though the basketball program had the necessary support to sustain success. He had taken Michigan to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, won back-to-back Big Ten regular-season titles and the team was 24-7 overall and 12-6 in Big Ten play heading into the postseason in 1989. Frieder had spurned Arizona State a couple years earlier, but was approached again in March.

Sounds like Bo was saying "to hell with basketball".

He got a big raise going to Az State; plus, he was considered an underachiever at Michigan, had a lot of pressure and the fans were giving him a hard time, despite a lot of regular season winning.

Bo was right to fire him. Can't let an employee of another school coach your team.

A Michigan man is going to coach a Michigan team. He accepted the job so he was not a Michigan man.
