Someone who almost always wants to argue from the perspective of the least popular side. Often times you know they don't even believe what they are saying but unlike playing Devil's Advocate they won't admit it

Maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend. It is most likely a man

Sometimes they may be right, sometimes they may have good points, but what are the odds that whether it's sports related, food related, politics related or whatever the topic of discussion, that they will hold the minority opinion almost every time?

My dad is the contrarian in the family. I was eating dinner with my aunt one night and she told me in college that he took a debate class and ever since he has liked to take the side that is often least popular and pretend it's his own opinion

i know a guy that always wants to argue sports

His last argument was that LSU told Jeremy Hill to leave so Fournette could take over....that is stupid. Is a contrarian, probably not, just stupid

I feel like most contrarian's i know are pretty calculated in what they want to say

I do. Incredibly annoying people. Not surprisingly, they're also the most detestable type of message board poster.

Made of nothing but. I will not talk to my mom or sister about politics because of this, since from their end it always devolves into name calling. Basically the watered down version of the Bluths.

The first word out of my wife's mouth after I say something is more often than not "no" followed by her dissenting opinion.

She's not like that with everyone. I think it's just cause she hates me.

Guy I live with is like that. Will argue for the sake of arguing sometimes. He's actually very articulate and has a pretty good vocabulary, so sometimes, he'll sound like he knows exactly what he's talking about. He's just got confidence through the roof about what he says.. regardless of whether it's true.

Isn't contrarianism the Jewish tradition?

I reject your premise that contrarians even exist, sir. Just because you are wrong all the time and your helpful family member feels compelled to correct you (for your own good of course) does not make said family member a "contrarian."

Not the case at all. People who act as contrarians for the sake of it, are incredibly annoying, and are compensating for something, be it lack of intelligence or some other inadequacy.

I absolutely respect an opposing view, or even an exercise in arguing opposite from your opinion. But we're not talking about that. We're talking about confrontational people who love to argue & fight.....just because.

I have a brother who's a know-it-all and has to involve himself and play expert/director/advisor in every project or decision anyone makes the mistake of telling him about.

I have this same relative. I fear we may be related.
