I know of a high school baseball player who is being given a scholarship to a private HS and is also receiving travel money to drive back and forth everyday. Is this legal?

No to the scholarship part.
The travel money is probably built into the scholarship fund too.

No. Not even close to legal.

Horribly illegal
Signed an LHSAA coach
The tuition "exemption" is no big deal, but no, you can't give a kid fricking gas money.

Guess they should just give the kid a car and book it on the records as a very small bus. Then they could pay for the gas on the bus.

When I was in high school, granted it was 10 years ago, I received a "waiver of tuition" rather than a scholarship. But this was the MPSA and not LHSAA.
ETA: not tooting my own horn, I wasn't overly gifted as an athlete, but this school was very small and needed players

If it's academic then it's legal
If it's sports related it's illegal

I am almost 100% sure there is a legal way to do this.
and how do you even know the details of the situation?
let me guess, Just a jealous dad who's son's team is either getting beat by the "illegal" player or who's son is getting beat out for a spot by the "illegal"

Ponchy got that information for the player's grandfather
Could be an old man wanting to brag on his grandkid, but that's where info came from

The schools could be legal, depending on all the particulars...
Travel money.....NO

MPSA (MAIS now) doesn't give a frick. Same thing occurred with me.
However, when I was in the lhsaa several of us were given an informal free meal plan. No paperwork, no money received, but the lunch staff knew to just let us keep walking past the checkout line with our food

Hank should have taken the Fontainebleau job instead of Ponchy. Why risk getting shanked everyday by the WT of Tangipahoa?

FHS has 0 talent now in most sports. 5 years ago they were top in district in many sports. Not sure if Lakeshore has that big of impact or what
