when will these start hitting the market and/or be worth buying?
I've seen some dates say mid 2014, but will these early models be worth purchasing over xbox 1 or PS4, relative to game titles, bugs, etc?

I agree. Steam machines are essentially just a nerfed gaming pc for the living room.

Not building a PC bc don't have the time, interest or want to spend the money.

Bc they offer near PC gaming in the living room cheaper and without having to be built?

Not cheaper. They are nothing more than prebuilt small form factor PCs, and it's still cheaper to build one if cost is a concern. As for time, it's honestly not that big of a deal. A lot of people are intimidated by the concept of "building" a computer, but a more appropriate term should be "assembling," because you're simply fitting parts in slots, snapping in cables, and the only tool you need is a screwdriver. And plenty of folks here to help.

Appreciate the info. Still would prefer to be able to game in the living room vs in front of a PC

I'm saying that you can build a gaming PC for your living room. There is nothing proprietary about the Steam Box. You'll be able to put steamOS on any PC and connect the steam controller or another controller of your choice. But you might as well put Windows on it instead of SteamOS so that you can play EVERY PC game (including games not on steam) instead of just the Linux titles on Steam.

I think the op is showing us why steam boxes are good for valve. It's raising interests even if it doesn't make sense to us.

very good point. Tom's Hardware needs more posters.

Yeah, it makes ppl look at gaming PCs in a different light.
We have said that from the beginning. They think its a "console" and realize it is actually a PC inside a different form factor.
