I guess what I have is old Chicago bricks all on my walkway. I am also assuming they are porous and water gets trapped inside them and freezes. When it freezes, they break up and basically shatter on the top. Once the top part breaks off, I can see ice inside them.

Is there anything I can do to stop it?

Wouldnt that detract from the value of the house?

Whoa! If anything it adds value. Especially if you spray the screen door and make it a boat.

Shotgun 3 beers then consider what to drink next.

Relax with the "more character" idea

Sealing them with a stone sealer would probably help...

Pave your walkway with Yetis. They will still be around long after the nuclear holocaust.

Hammer – Sealing the top of the brick wont work once it freezes – you have to seal entire brick or water soaks in (from underneath etc) and as it freezes they crack. My parents have this prob on a walkway and they just replace the bricks – some bricks were meant for walls and don’t do well as a walkway.

First you need to get that nasty green stuff washed off and then seal your bricks with commercial grade sealer.

Wouldn't I have to pick up every single one and seal the entire thing? Water is probably wicked up from the ground, right?

Stop them from freezing. Heavy deep layer of activly composting material covered with a piece of black plastic should do the trick.

Bags of leaves, hay, and shredded hardwood mulch moistened with some septic tank accelerator added in makes nice compost.

Hammer – yep water is seeping/wicking in from ground so when it freezes u are …….. You could cover it etc to prevent from freezing if its not a big area.

Have the same problems with some on my walk. Most likely "face" brick that are meant to be laid on walls, less surface area and shed water easier. I tried sealing with a common masonry sealant....kinda worked. Had to dig out a few and replace with like bricks. My advice is to find a good supply and just replace as they self destruct....

You can try sealing with siloxane when you are 100% sure they aren't holding any moisture but that prolly still won't do anything

That being said if you try sealing it and there is still moisture inside you are screwed bc you are trapping it in

Used Chicago usually don't pop. Not much you can really do man just hope this shite doesn't happen again
