Hypothetical: Broncos start the game up 20-0, but Manning isn't allowed to play.

Game would start and proceed exactly as planned, but Manning wouldn't be allowed to play a single snap. Seahawks would start the game down 20-0.

Do you take this deal if you're Denver? Seattle?

I think a fun fictional "stat" to develop for players would be a consensus amount of points that their absence would be worth. (For example, as a Saints fan, you'd have to give us at least a 17 point head start for me to even consider sitting Drew.)

Follow up question, who do you think has the highest "You can't play" number in the league?

Drew Brees no doubt.

Peyton has more weapons and a better line for a backup.

But they're close.

ETA:

28 points to bench Drew vs Seattle

Probably Drew Brees.

That offense runs directly through him, and we see what happens when he plays anywhere from bad to mediocre. Jimmy Graham has a tendency to play soft, Darren Sproles has lost a step, Marques Colston is nothing special - but solid, Kenny Stills is young, and so forth. Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers would also be up there, IMO. To a lesser extent, Big Ben.

well being down 20-0 to start the game is a lot different than being down 20-0 with like 10 minutes left in the 2nd. I would take Seattle.

I would agree that the highest number almost has to be a QB

I'm trying not to be a homer, but with the way the Saints offense is constructed, Brees might actually be my answer. It's either him or Manning.

I would take this deal if I were the Seahawks. With 60 minutes of that secondary against a back-up QB, I feel like they'd force a turnover or two that lead to points.

I seriously doubt that if Peyton was out for the game Seattle would be -20 favorites, so I figure this would likely benefit Denver.

Brees's "you can't play" number is lowered by our defense now... whereas before it would have been the highest. also our backup QBs have been shitty

Broncos have the highest scoring offense in NFL history. The backup QB got a full quarter against Philadelphia with the starters still in the game and got a full half against the Raiders in the finale, again with starters playing much of it. I think he led them to maybe 3 points. Quite certain he led them to 0 touchdowns. Manning is the linchpin in that offense since he is the offensive coordinator. Seattle would destroy Denver if Denver was spotted 20 but Manning could not play.

No single player means more to his team's success than Manning. That is why he will win the MVP.

I agree 100% that Manning is the most valuable player to his team in the league, but I mean how much was Denver trying to score in those games with that backup. Both were absolute blowouts where they were just trying to run the clock out.

I have no doubts that the Seahawks could possibly beat the Broncos by 20 without Manning, but if Peyton were ruled out tomorrow for the SB, no way the line would go all the way to -20, so the Broncos would still be favored if spotted a 20 point lead.

I think Manning is the highest with Brees being second. Manning just doesn't throw the ball he's pretty much the OC at the same time

Yeah, I agree with that. He didn't miss a beat when Jack Del Rio was roaming the sidelines this season, and he took Jim Caldwell to a super bowl.

Keep in mind though that the line is based on the result of the game, so a 20 point head start is difficult to compare to a betting line.

I'd take the deal if I'm a hawk, instantly. That defense with an offense that could give them 16, 19, 22, or 23 points against the broncos would be a great deal if possible.

Eta....I'm drunk, in my mind I thought Seattle's D got 6 for them in my scenario.

I think Denver wouldn't score anymore than 3 points without manning on the field. Maybe 6, but Seattle wins eventually.

You would take the 20 points all day long. The hardest thing to do when playing Seattle is to score points. The Seattle defense is the only reason why they're in the Super Bowl.

Besides, an NFL back-up should be able to make a few plays. Trindon could make a play or two in the return game (not necessarily score).

Not to mention the fact that bad weather/field conditions could possibly keep the score down.

I'd take the 20 points all day long.

You have to add Brady as well. What he did this season with an otherwise mediocre squad is nothing short of spectacular.

To answer the OPs question, yes i would take that if i was Denver. I think they can hold Seattle under 20 and that is assuming the backup can't put up any points

I'd take it. Seattle is built to play with a lead, down 20-0 would take them out if their comfort zone on offense.
