At the risk of being laughed off the board I was wondering what the opinions of an AR based hunting rifle would be? Looking to build a 300 blk or 6.8 spc

Edit: thanks for the grammar check

Barnes has some 120gr black tips in the works for bigger game. There's an article floating around of a guy who took a black bear with em.

300blk is a decent hunting round but compared to other deer rounds it's somewhat anemic. 270 and 30-06 both dwarf 300blk.

That being said, it's still effective and can be suppressed. The subsonic rounds are ridiculously quiet with a suppressor.

Bap. Since the subsonics are higher in weight but slowe, is there any lack of penetration issues vs a lighter supersonic? For, say, a 120 yd shot?

Nothing wrong with that. My nephew has killed two deer (9yrs old) and both were with a 223 so they are sufficent too. Most cant shoot well enough though to use them

I agree for hunting where you have long range shots but if you are hunting a place with a 100 yd max shot it seems like it would be a great option.

If it is good enough to hunt terrorist, it's good enough to hunt hogs.

Sounds legit.

My gf and I both killed a deer with my 300 blk this year. Mine went about 20 yards and crashed, hers dropped where it stood. I shot mine at about 30 yards and she shot hers at 100 yards. It puts a hurtin on them out to 200-250 yards. I shoot a 110gr barnes tac tx, the same ones posted above on the bear but lighter. I would take my blackout over a 6.8 any day! However, if the woods I hunted weren't so thick, I would invest in the new m&p10 308 with ambi controls since I'm a lefty.

I dont know much about the 6.8, but an AR10 in 308 would probably be my first choice for an AR-platform deer rifle.

300BLK is gaining popularity and is plenty adequate for most whitetail hunting in La, but doesn't match up to many if the modern, popular deer calibers.

I'd say within 150 you would probably only see a few inches of drop. But I imagine past that range it would start dropping considerably.

This thread always poses a good question.

Folks ask it because they want ONE gun to be the 'end all, be all' when they have to travel light (in a shite flies scenario).

No one ever wants to try to answer it, because there is no real answer to the question.

That said, 5.56 is here to stay. Too many guys have bought one, and combine that w the fact that the military doesn't want to change. And you have a bulk production ammo caliber more than ever. It will continue to be here for a looooooooong time. You don't have to be a gun guy to know that the average person that just bought a $1000 ar ain't going to a 6.5 or 6.8 then has to buy thousands of new rounds.

Even if military adopted 6.8 or 300 blk en mass, it would take a long time to get those ammo boxes of 20 rounds down to $7.99.

Apparently they are looking for cartridge-less ammo and want to skip the next cartridge of choice.

To me the biggest advantage of the .300 blk is having one rifle that will handle two calibers with just the change of the upper. Pop two pins and bingo a different weapon platform. Already having several AR-15 rifles and many mags for them makes the .300blk a no brainer in my case as compared to the 6.8 or even a .308, 7mm-08 etc. in the AR platform.
