Friday, January 24, 2014, 5:00 a.m.

With winter weather in the area creating hazardous travel conditions, LSU will be closed Friday. All classes and events scheduled on Friday, January 24, 2014 have been canceled.

Faculty and all non-essential personnel are asked not to report to the university. However, essential personnel are required to report to their respective departments. Employees should check with their supervisors to determine if they are classified as essential personnel.

Essential staff members unable to reach the university due to road closures or other weather-related issues should immediately contact their respective supervisor for further instructions.

Any updates concerning LSU’s status will be posted on www.lsu.edu.

LSU wouldn't call it until 6 am or so. They're always really slow to cancel class.

That way if they wait until the morning they'll see if it's actually tough to get to class or not.

Glad they finally canceled classes, but that should've been pretty clear to them last evening.

Yet another reason I wish I would have done undergrad at LSU. We didn't get out of class for weather once in 4 years.

It's such a pain in the arse to make up a day. They don't want to call a snow day unless it would be dangerous for kids to get to campus.

Yeah BG didn't even cancel classes on 9/11. Not saying getting out of classes was important just showing they NEVER cancel.

I remember times driving down Manville to make a 8am class in at least 10 inches of snow. BG don't give a frick.

Since I've been at LSU, they have made up every single day that we've had cancelled

Why are there not a couple of snow/ice days "built in"? I know it doesn't happen often, but it isn't unheard of for there to be enough ice on the roads to warrant canceling classes for a day or two.

For elementary schools maybe

We missed 3 days last year for the hurricane and bomb threat and lost our 2 day fall break and had a day of Saturday class

LSU doesn't build any of that bullshite into the schedule. What ever is missed for weather will be made up one way or another.

Damn, I remember in college we didn't make up any classes due to closings for snow/ice. That sucks.

At any rate, I do think it was a good idea to cancel classes. Someone I knew who commuted about 40 miles to college got killed when she wrecked on her way to school when the roads were icy. She was going to a night class that wasn't canceled. It's just not worth the risk.
