Modem/Router All in One

Since I've gone back to Cox for internet, they gave me an all in one modem and router. I have to say, it's pretty crappy. I feel like I have to reset it constantly to get a not choppy connection. I bought a really good router about a year ago before we moved but never hooked it up. Will it still work if I just pretend the modem I have now is just a modem? Or will it be all out of whack?
TIA
TIA

the problem isn't the modem/router.. its the internet itself.

I am on hold with Cox right now so they can activate my moms all in one, hopefully it isn't a piece of shite! BTW yes it should work as a router.

I have one of those, and I had to cut off the router portion and use my own.
I didn't like it either. Since I use my own, i've had no issues.

I too have been having choppy wireless connection, even though I just got a new modem, a DOCSIS 3 or something. But I've had the same router since 2007 I think. Will an updated router get rid of the choppy connection?

Your best bet is to leave shitty Cox

They didn't give you a Modem. You're renting it for $9 a month. Give it back to them and buy you a Motorola SB6580.

My Mom has Charter high speed with an all in one netgear router/modem, she has the best internet I have ever used.

Cox is the best internet there is IMO. I've got 25 MGS right now and will go up to the 50 once the intro package is done.
But when I asked they said that was the best they had out right now. Probably gonna just try and hook up my router and see. Because I've also found the connection isn't nearly as far reaching as it used to be.

What router do you have?
If it's the reach that's an issue, have you considered just using the spare modem as an extender?
It should work fine if you connect it directly to the modem combo. May have to go in and "turn off" the wireless capability (I'm not sure this is required).

Hand's suggestion really is correct, even though it doesn't answer your question.
Give the model number of the all in one they gave you. Should be easy enough to turn your DHCP services off on it and port the 'net to your other router.
But really, for best results with Cox, buy a DOCSIS 3.0 router (really doesn't matter which) if you continue to have these issues.

Without anymore information, you have no way of knowing this.

The modem I've got is a Cisco DPC3825. The router is a Cisco Linksys E3200
