I had previously started a thread on Star Trek Voyager, and whether or not I should purchase the first season. It was stated that I should watch DS9 first. I got out of Star Trek after TNG ended. I tried watching Enterprise when it first came out, but was bored enough that I gave it up early in the series.
I started watching DS9 last week on NetFlix, starting with the first season. I just finished episode 8. I must say, so far, this is a well written enjoyable show. I had forgotten what "good" Star Trek was. I think the movies, both the Next Gen and reboots, made me forget how plot driven the Star Trek shows were. For a space based science fiction story, there really isn't a lot of special effects involved. So the viewer isn't overwhelmed with flashy space battles and CGI nonsense. I can enjoy the story, and the fleshing out of these characters without getting sidetracked by a 30 minute computer generated special effect fiesta. Its basically the anti Star Wars prequels.
Right now, the episodes are very stand-alone. I know later, DS9 gets into some major story arcs like the Dominion War. Can't wait.
One small thing that annoys me, and this is true of most of Star Trek, is the self referencing of stuff that the audience isn't aware of. Stuff like "its hotter than the Xymox desert up in here." Or "she was madder than a Gorlack after the feast of shiznon." Stuff like that doesn't really add to the episode and is slightly cringe worthy.
Overall, I'm really enjoying this. I'm trying to watch an episode a night, though with 170+ episodes, this may be difficult.

I know. But when I get home from work, all Hell breaks loose at my house. By the time I do homework with my daughter, get her fed and bathed and get her to sleep, I have about a solid hour to myself. I may try some binge watching on the weekends. Maybe.

DS9 gets a lot better as you go. If you are enjoying the first season you will really like the entire series.

Good to hear. I'm really looking forward to the dominion war.

I don't know if I should laugh or be insulted.

You've obviously never had a flyxlpohn from a gundark

I haven't had the pleasure.

It's better than giving a shlunor to a ryatovian but more expensive.

We may be best eFriends now.
ETA: And you should hop in my TOS thread. Even in the middle, there is value for any Star Trek fan.

Perhaps Quark can set me up in one of his holosuites to give it a try.

You never know.
They may have boldly went.

I've always wondered if Star Wars existed in Star Trek.

You mean like in Earth's past in the Star Trek universe, were people watching Star Wars? Or does the Star Wars universe exist in the same universe as Star Trek?

Star Trek is from our future.
Star Wars was "a long time ago".
Maybe the the first Borg was the illegitimate love-child of C3PO and Mon Mothma?

I wish I was watching DS9 for the first time. It and Earth: Final Conflict (also a Roddenberry creation) were really the shows that hooked me into scifi.
Also - I implore you to watch B5 right after you finish DS9. I love both but you can help but wonder about the allegations Straczynski (creator) made regarding DS9. It is worth watch on its own merits and I think it is better than DS9.
I'm almost done rewatching Oz. I think I am going to go on a different route with my next series and rewatch one series and watch one I've never seen concurrently. I usually just binge-watch. This thread has me leaning DS9 on the rewatch. May try to finish Farscape out (S4).
