Had the exact same thing happen to me. Everyone said I flinched real bad when I shot but I explained that I was actually raising the gun / my head to look at why it wasnt shooting and safety not moving when the gun fired

I got mine operating but I don't trust it. I think it has made its last hunt

I'm not saying these rifles don't have problems, but it looks to me like the guy had his finger on the trigger while he was switching off the safety.

Not saying it's what you do or anything, but that dude looks like he had his finger on the trigger when he switched it to fire.

Mine actually was on fire and trigger wouldn't pull. Pushed against safety a few times and still didn't work. As I moved gun and was putting it back on safety to examine what te issue was it fired.

Eta: finger looked to be in front of trigger guard. Simulated on nearby rifle and that's how my hand positioned

Yeah that's fricking scary. I don't believe I could ever keep a gun that did that to me. It would always be on my mind when I'm about to shoot. I get irate with ftf/fte, that would be another level of pissed.

IIRC, I pulled trigger on fire, nothing. Checked to make sure safety was off, saw that it was, and pushed it forward as hard as I could and nothing happened. Made sure the bolt was closed and still nothing. I touched the trigger (not pulling, just lightly placed my finger on it to find it) and it went off. I cleaned the mech real good and it seemed to dry fire fine. Then I ran some rounds through it this weekend and had issues ejecting. Time for a new rifle

I don't own a 700, but I have heard/read about these issues. Do its defenders believe these misfires to be purely user error? If I remember correctly, even Remington acknowledged problems with the older 700s (Pre-84ish?).

I doubt they believe there is a conspiracy to take down Remington, so there must be a reason that they think the 700 is gtg. I assume that they just believe Remington's mod fixed the problem? You're a younger guy, so I'd guess your 700 is newer, unless it was handed down from dad/grandad?

I later had similar butt slightly different issues ( light striking bullet). Had work done and wasn't satisfied with the way the safety felt so had all new parts put in. Fired 14 rounds through gun and 2 bucks killed with it this year with no issue except for poor bullet performance ( not guns fault)

Not sure how old mine is. Been through two other guys that my dad works with ( they said it kicked to hard) before my dad bought it. I traded a Remington 710 and 200 dollars for it with my dad. ( Got 710 back after I told him he fricked me over giving me a death trap for a gun)0

So this is a mid 80's issue, manufacturing wise? I've got 3 and haven't had any issues, but it does make you think.

It's been documented a bunch. Several tv programs and investigative journalist have done stories on it. Remington says they have never been able to duplicate the malfunctions on guns they received that had problems but acknowledges that the safety design they had was a problem.

I'd like to know the date. Mine is from 1989 and all it does is kill stuff on purpose.

It is widely known, and acknowledged by the company, that pre-1982 Model 700 rifles can fire automatically when the safety switched to the “Fire” position.

Looks like I was off a couple of years.

If the description of the video is correct, why would you shoulder the rifle after a malfunction like that?

Do you have the walker trigger on it and have you done any adjustments to the trigger pull weight?

I've witnessed a 700 misfire first hand. My brother has one we were sighting in a few years ago. Had it in the sled, pushed the safety forward and it went off. I jumped his arse and told him he had his finger on the trigger. Chambered another round with me watching closely, same thing. That gun was manufactured around 2002 or so.

My 700 is from 1968 I believe and I've never had an issue.
