FSU had some ballers that year. He would have played with Peter Warrick and PK Sam

Good article, thanks for posting.

I am a bit turned off by the fact he doesn't go into details of his demise. Most of us know at least one cause, but I would like to know the darkest stuff. Thats what makes these "pulled myself out of despair" stories powerful.

He probably goes into detail in his book. If he tells you now, you won't buy the book.

his relationship with Gruden suffered.

“Having a head coach who always asked, ‘What have you done for me lately?’ so our relationship wasn’t the best in the world, though I had to respect his authority,” Clayton explains. “I didn’t like how he treated me at times and I didn’t think it was fair.”

Gruden hates LSU!

I loved Michael Clayton. He had so man facets to his game but the greatest was his blocking ability. The man loved to get nasty on the outside. I also will never forget that stick in the Auburn game in 2001

I like the sales pitch that was used to get him to state in-state...

His abuse of his body on the football field was part of the reason he didn't last. During his LSU career he often hit with such force that he injured himself. He didn't have the physical tools to handle that abuse. He was one of my all time favourite players.
Maybe he will get into broadcasting and come back to work for LSU.

Yeah if you're going to go through the trouble of writing a book you may as well be honest about the situation, maybe that could have helped it crack 100 pages

Anyway that recruiting class was the most important in LSU history. We locked down our border and made it cool for top talent to stay in state.

I remember Clayton sayin when he entered the NFL he wanted to have a Jerry Rice like career. Well, Rice trained like crazy, maybe he should have to to prevent some of those injuries. But at least he got rings to back up his playin days and I'm sure money in the bank.

Everything that I've read about Clayton was that he is a health nut. Sometimes, injuries are just unavoidable.

Like I've said many times, Clayton and Spears were almost locked to leave the state. Saban pulling in these two guys together changed the landscape of LSU football. Some argue that Faulk did, but Faulk was basically the only big name we could retain and that trend did not continue by the late 90s. After Clayton and Spears, we have been able to nab huge Louisiana prospects every year.

Keeping those LA athletes in state transformed LSU into a powerhouse. Saban gets all the gredit fot that!

Maybe. But I don't think he was the type to train year around.

Being a drunk doesn't really help train the body
