I'm looking to buy a used watch from a forum. It will be a person to person sale. Does Paypal have a good reputation protecting against fraud? I read their purchase protection page that allows you to fill out a dispute, but I'm not sure how that relates to buying from joe-blow off of the internet.

Anyone have experience buying things this way? What's the most secure way to do it?

What is the person's reputation on the forum? Has he been registered on there a while?

I do this all the time on golfwrx for golf equipment

I had one transaction turn out to be a scam but PayPal took care of it

It's basically just like eBay, but these forums are able to circumvent the fees

Take screenshots of the listing if you prefer to have backup, since most listings can be edited

The guys been registered for 2 1/2 years. Only 24 posts, but they've all been purchases or sales. I know I've only been to the board for the for sale or wanted to buy items so I don’t think that's too strange. I've already been in contact with one person who I'm pretty sure was trying to scam me. Checked back after he contacted me and he was banned. I think the forum does a decent job of monitoring for scams, but id still like the assurance of knowing PayPal will let me dispute the charge if I'm delivered the wrong item.

if you're buying a higher end used watch (Rolex, Omega, etc) I suggest that you have the movement verified by someone who can recognize it as genuine as a lot of repped watches look really good on the surface but they can't replicate the inner movement.
