I have read the first book and, as of last night, finished watching the first season. I love it

Should I read the second book before watching more or just continue onto Season 2?

I am not a fast reader so it takes a while for me to get through an 800 page book

Since you are well behind in the series anyway, I would recommend reading the 2nd book first. Here's why. Game of Thrones is hard to follow because there are so many characters and story arcs going on simultaneously and then later flipping back and forth over time. Because the books (any book) has more details, it will help you follow what become very condensed and fast switching scenes in the TV series.

Read the book first. It is the better medium for the story.

I feel like you should read all the books before watching the series.

The books are amazing and just a better medium for the story and watching the series first ruins, or at least cheapens, the reading experience

The first book and story follow each other pretty closely, but it diverges after that. Reading the books gives you a much greater understanding of the character motivations and history.

If you're in a hurry, try the audiobooks coupled with Chapter Summaries

In an ideal world, read the second book (Clash of Kings) then watch season 2. Then read Storm of Swords and watch season 3. However, once you get to season 3, it's not "one-book-per-season". Book 1=Season 1, Book 2=Season 2. But Season 3 is 60% of Book 3, and goes a small bit into Book 5. And then Season 4 is going to be the last 40% of Book 3, some more of Book 5, and starting to get into Book 4. So it's not that linear once you get into Season 3. Therefore, if I were in your same position, I would watch seasons 2 and 3 and then read the books because I'd be dying to know what happens.

Read the books...there are several things the show doesn't go into details on or omits...it will also make it much easier to keep all the characters straight after reading the books.

I dont think it is necessary to read the book before watching the show, but in order to understand who the characters are and their role in the story reading the book is required.

The books go into more detail and will make it easier to understand whats going on with all the different characters and plot lines.

Books first, there's a lot more in the books than in the show. The show hits the very dramatic points in the story, but there's a lot of back story that is left out. There's a reason why the crackpot theories thread is over 500 pages.

IMO, read the books first. They're much more in depth than the show. You'll be able to pick up on a lot of subtle nuances that you would have otherwise missed. I watched the first couple of seasons before I read the books, I wish I would have read them first.

Lots of posters on here have gone from Hodors to Experts in the past year on here; myself included . And knowing what's going to happen in Season 4 is driving me crazy.

The advantage of not reading the books is that you will not be pissed off when they leave the books (And they will). HBO is not going to wait on the author to finish his work.

Read them first. By the time you finish you will have 3 seasons to watch which, along with the time to read, should put you a lot closer to the release of Winds of Winter.
