What if you get a call about a job you applied for while you're at work?

I just applied for a job. Unfortunately, this is only the first time I've been in the position to apply for a new job while I have one. The one I have now is a contract job with about a year left, so I need to get out before time runs out. I was laid off a few years ago from my first job, so I never had to hide anything before.

Do I just sit at my desk, wait for cell phone to ring and get my arse out the door ASAP, or just let it go to voicemail?

If you see the call coming through and you can take it, take it. It's your life and you need to do what is best for you/your family especially if it's job related.

I shut my door. Are you in a cube? Ask them if you can call them right back I guess.

Cube unfortunately. It would be about 20-30 seconds to get outside as I am on the second floor. Safe to answer after about 5 seconds of ringing I would think. I wouldn't be outside, but a quieter area. Not as quiet as I would prefer since there would be two people to cross, but I don't think they GAF.

Tell them you're driving and would like to call them back when you get an opportunity to pull over. Buys you the time you need and makes you seem like a safe and responsible person.

The company you applied with doesn't know you currently have a job? I would assume they do and I think they'd understand.

I'm pretty sure that they understand if you can't take the call right away.

Nah. Answer it and tell them that you'll call them right back. It's not a big deal.

Answer and tell them you are not in a position to talk at the moment and schedule a time to call them back.

let it go to voice mail and call back ASAP.

it is a contract job so you could just take it and let them know you will call them back.

Tell them you can't talk at the moment and reschedule to a time where you can.

Answer while you're getting up to walk away from your desk. I've talked to several other companies while at my current job. Really not a big deal.

Put your feet up on the desk and take the call on the spot.

They know the drill. Don't sweat it so much and just call them right back.

Talking to them in an cube setting will be awkward and you'll sound weird.

If the people you are currently employed with don't understand and are mad at you for finding another job before your contract runs out frick them.

I'd answer the phone, tell them you will call them back in a moment when you get somewhere quiet and then go sit in your car or something.
