Debate: Pan's Labyrinth

There's a bit of divide in this film: did Ofelia imagine everything and move into to the afterlife to be a princess, or was it all in her head and she was simply killed in cold blood?
It's clear from the start that she has a very over active imagination, to where she could have certainly come up with the fawn, the tasks, and the afterlife all in her head, but I think there is one piece of damning evidence against people who think it is all in her head: the chalk. If that chalk wasn't magical, then I don't think Ofelia would have escaped from her room to rescue her brother, since Captain Vidal instructed her guard to not let her escape and kill her if she does. I don't see how she could have made it past him if she hadn't had magic on her side.
So what's your opinion, aside from the fact that the movie is simply incredible? Did she imagine it all in order to escape from a harsh reality, or did it all actually happen to her?

It can go both ways, because it's more interesting that way.
The chalk could be a metatheatrical point; as in, the movie does for the audience what the fantasy did for the girl.

Capitán Vidal: You could have obeyed me!
Doctor: But captain, to obey - just like that - for obedience's sake... without questioning... That's something only people like you do.
^^fricking chills, every time.
I thought the most damning evidence would be the root. The mother got distinctly better after Pan placed the root under her bed, and died after he burned it. How does that work?
