Agree 100%. Why here, of all cities, they want to fight against music.. which is basically what it is. People who move next to music spots have no right to complain about the noise, they knew what they were getting into.

There's a protest planned in front of City Hall on January 17 LINK

A bunch of NIMBYs on both sides. In the end it doesn't affect me as I live deep in a RD-2 zoning district and I like my music clubs mellow. I get both sides, but supporters of the ordinance are downplaying it while opposition is making a bigger deal out of it that than I believe it is. Long story short, check your zoning before you buy and be respectful of your neighbors.

In the Marigny, French Quarter, downtown and a few other places you should expect noise. I live in a condo by a bar that has a band most weekends. Why would I complain? I knew the bar had live music when I moved here.

Exactly. I can't believe people who are shocked when they move to a place next to a bar and then hear music all the time.

Bars have been there forever but I'm not sure if they were always as loud. Some of those folks living there might have been there before FQ became Disney for adults.

B.S. - I was going to the quarter in the early 80s, a little before I was even legal, and it was loud then. I doubt that there are many owner-occupants living there now that had no idea what they were getting into.

Yep, I'm too old to have a high tolerance for bitchy people.

--Accepted decibel levels in the French Quarter should be returned to 1997 levels so that the maximum level in residential areas between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. is 70 decibels, compared to the current level of 80 decibels. In commercial areas, the decibel level would be lowered to a maximum of 75 from 80.

If you ask me it probably has a lot to do with the commercialization of New Orleans since Katrina. In the past most of the transplants came here for the culture of the city but now with a lot more opportunities for work there is a lot of money flowing into the city that doesn't care about the culture. Sadly in this city as in most money controls politics.

i believe the latest article from offbeat on the issue

Stuart Smith is terrible.

that said, i think many people dont realize how ridiculous the existing laws are that arent enforced - so im not sure how radical a change you see here even if it passes.

While I doubt it will get enforced everywhere you can sure as hell bet that it will be used to shut down places the city does not like.
