Tanking: Why I was against it. Why I am now for it.

This is sure to be a hot topic so let me air my opinion.

Two seasons ago I was very much against tanking. For the following reasons:

• The only player worth a damn was AD. And we had to have the first pick to get him.
• We owned our pick solely.
• Chance was very slim to get that pick. So why root for your team to lose?
• We needed to make a bunch of moves to even be close to a contender anyway.

Now it's TANK TANK TANK:

• We are missing one or two pieces.
• If we suck bad enough, we are guaranteed to have our pick.
• If we don't suck bad enough... There is a very HIGH chance we don't get our pick
• We really need that fricking pick
• If we get that top 5 pick, there is a very good chance we (with maybe one more move) have a complete team to grow with.
• If we don't have this pick. We are so fricked and will live in mediocrity forever.

Like I said in another post... Don't think of it as rooting for your team to lose. Think of it as rooting for your team to beat the 76ers for our draft pick

This team of AD + 1 Quarter Gordon + Dleaguers were a few silly turnovers away from beating the Mavs and Spurs. They literally fumbled the last 2 games away, the Mavs/Spurs didn't force those turnovers. We are not going to be bad enough to keep our pick. At the very least you need to wait until 15 games left in the season before thinking about it.

When you look at the Pelicans' top needs and then see a pair of stud small forwards and a legit center prospect at the top of the 2014 draft board, visions of Steemer, Rivers, Roberts and Aminu playing 30-plus minutes this year have to start dancing in your head.

We need a center more than we need a 3. A center means that AD doesn't have to log any big minutes there.

His offensive game is too good to play the 5.

I've never been on board with the tank, but I am now. We're 6 games out of the 8th seed, and with our injuries we aren't getting there. So now we have a chance to get into that top 5, and land Wiggins, Parker, Embiid, Randle, Exum, Smart, Gordon, hell even Dell's man Dario Saric is looked at as a top 10 pick.

I'm never for tanking. Losing breeds losing. But this season it needs to be done. We need help. This draft offers help.

We need the scorched earth method. Burn it down and start over. We have pieces to work with, but coaching staff needs to go. I'm on the fence with the front office, but I'm not opposed to a fresh start there.

Where do people get this nonsense?

I don't know, I've liked the hook shots he's made recently. There's no reason he can't have both a midrange game and a post game.

Very true. He's already shown the drop step jump hook. We've seen his dribble drive which was much better in the beginning of the season. Monty oughta left him experiment more in the post. This season, for all intents and purposes, is over.

I wasn't a fan of it this year because I saw our roster and thought we had a shot at competing for the 8th seed. Sadly the injuries and our lack of defense has swayed my opinion.

serious question: what was our record with a full squad? i don't remember exactly, but it was like 7-2 or 7-3, IIRC. I know it was against shite opponents, but they didn't play many good ones in that stretch. what makes everyone think that we can't get a few pieces in free agency, especially if they can deal gordon and get that contract off the books?

i'm tired of every year being a tanking year. this would be 3 in a row. how many more years do we have to do this?

this season has been absurdly unlucky with injuries. i'm not so sure we are as far off as some believe.

I hear ya. I'm tired of losing too. Either if it's intentional or not, it sucks. But this year is different. Either we go that route and get a top 5 talent in a loaded draft, or we are fricked.

Monty's gone. Not trying to be a dick, but deal with it. Give the new coach, whoever it is, more pieces to work with. We will have a fresh outlook with new optimism. No more doom and gloom of this coaching staff holding us down. We can look at this season as a soft opening for our rebrand. Grand opening next season.

We only need to tank if we can get the top 5 pick. BTW say we suck it up this year, get a top 5 pick that was suppose to go to 76rs...When do they get the draft pick? How would that work? Wait till a year we are not in the top 5?

The pick has top 5 protection until 2020. After that it becomes a 2nd rounder. If we are bad enough to keep the pick this year then we dance this dance again next year. If we are bad enough to keep the pick in 2015...

The Timberwolves Pick we got in the CP3 trade and used on Rivers was actually owed to the Clippers 5 years earlier, but the TWolves sucked so long the protection expired.

Even if we shut down Jrue/Ryno for the season and trade EG for a shitty expiring, I think AD and Reke are good enough players to keep us from having a bottom 5 record. I'd love to get a top 3 pick, and we very well may with the 7th/8th worst record, but I think that putting a ~30mpg limit on AD and Reke is a bad idea. They're 2 young, key pieces to our future. You don't want to piss them off or hinder their development.
