Appearing on ESPN's NFL Insiders Monday, Chris Mortensen reported Saints DC Rob Ryan's long hair is considered an impediment to landing a head-coaching job.

Mort's report is via "several NFL executives," including an owner. Although Ryan's flowing, silver locks are unusual for an NFL coach, we highly doubt it's the reason he's never risen to the ranks of head coach. The 2013 Saints are the first team Ryan's coordinated to reach the playoffs, while he's been with four clubs since 2008. Like his brother Rex, Rob is a strong defensive mind, but we expect him to be back as Sean Payton's coordinator for 2014. He hasn't been linked to any head-coaching vacancies.

I stated in another thread that his personality doesn't gel with being the man, and he probably doesn't want it anyway.

If there is an award for coordinator of the year in the NFL, ROB RYAN should get it. He turned the worst defense in NFL HISTORY into a top 10 defense in 1 season.

Seems like he genuinely loves new Orleans and his current job.

While I 100% agree with this, I feel like a few more seasons of our D being good (and I fully expect that to happen) and he will get looks regardless of his hair or what car he drives. That's the sort of opportunity a lot of people would not turn down.

I am very hopeful that he sticks around for a while, but I'm not going to be surprised if he doesn't. He took the WORST D ever to a top 10 in one season with mostly the same players. That's impressive no matter how you look at it.

in most cities in th US, Rob Ryan sticks out like a sore thumb. In NoLa, he is just a one of the many eccentric folks you would find in neighbor bar at 230pm on a Tues.

You were also asked in that thread was is it in his personality that's so detrimental?

Sorry for partying

Dude is a perfect fit here, I think he stays awhile. Not to mention he gets complete reign of the defense and gets to work with one of the best offensive play callers in the league to complement his game.

Do you know how many Coaches actually do fall into that category?

Very believable.

Remember, the rumor is Miami didn't hire Mike Tomlin because he was too "hip hop"

Any human or non human that would report such a story should be tarred and feathered. But I'm old.

Romeo Crennel comes to mind immediately. Oh but wait, he's a minority so he gets an edge.
Andy Reid ain't svelte either
