Taught to pick up the ball and run back through the endzone when they pick it up say inside the 10?

Why do so many of these guys pick it up and do stupid stuff at the 2 or 3 instead of taking a safety? Odds are high the other team gets 3-7 so why not give them 2 and then play D in a normal setting? Pats punter got lucky that fumble went through the endzone.

Why?

They feel the need to remind the world why they are punters

Allen panicked. I'm sure he has been coached to take a safety.

I should have known it was Dierdorf. I thought he had retired already and was wondering if Matt Millen had switched from ESPN.

I thought they might call an incomplete forward pass. But on replay it was a clear fumble.

This might be a stupid question, but why doesn't the punter run towards the sideline and throw a forward, incomplete pass?

Dierdorf totally shanked his analysis of this. What an idiot.

I think he realized 3/4 of the way through and started trying to cover his tracks

My buddy was punter in high school though and I taught him to do that. He was a soccer kid before that.

Did it in a game and our freshman coach was pissssssssed

Would have to have a edible receiver in the area or get it past the line of scrimmage

If the punter runs towards the sideline, couldn't he get outside the pocket? Then throw it away? I really don't know....That's what I would think.

You have to be really fast to pull that off.

Unless there is a WR in the area, most punters wouldn't have enough arm strength to get it past the line of scrimmage.

You have to throw past the line of scrimmage as well

Because you are actually risking giving up more points. The other team gets the ball with the safety too. Plus you never know what will happen. You avoid giving the other team points and possession, pretty simple to understand IMO

The three rear blockers in a punt formation are all eligible receivers so the punter would pretty much just have to spike it
