Planning on trading in my truck(08 f250 6.4) today, and I have a leaky flex pipe coming off of the manifold. Have to drive from New Orleans to Jackson also, pulling a Tahoe to trade both in, so exhaust temps are going to be in the 1000+ range probably half of the time.

I got this aluminum repair tape from AutoZone yesterday, and upon further research, it is supposed to be good until 260°F. After I read that, I also saw that they have some stuff that is good to 1900°,but you need to put something under it to close off the leak somewhat.

I know aluminum melts at 1200, so should I be good using that as an underlayment? Keep in mind this only has to last for 250 miles until I get to the dealership.

Replacing the flex pipe is not an option because the cab has to come off

Eta: I am guessing it is the glue on the aluminum tape that melts at 260, but idk

Eta #2: highest my EGTs have ever gone was around 1785,but I was on it VERY hard

Put some JB weld on if you are concerned about them seeing it. It's not going to come off and not going to burn off. Will be a semi-permanent fix and probably costs less than the tape anyway. Let the engine cool down, get the quickset JB weld - mix it up and apply it. Will be rock hard in 10 minutes and you are good to go.

It is a hole in flex pipe. I think JB weld would just spread out all over the place and open up when the engine moves

Will melt within a few minutes after the pipe gets hot. I tried it on an exhaust manifold on my Jeep a few years ago. Felt pretty stupid after I watched it just melt away like wax.

Another problem is that the exhaust leak is causing higher EGTs....higher than normal.

With the surrounding steel getting to 1000-1500 degrees, it is gonna melt most things, except for steel. For some reason, I can't find any steel tape

I have never gotten repair tape to work long term... only in emergency or short term. It looks like you are stuck because of needing to tow. I can tell you that they do make tape rated higher than 250^. If you are really concerned, wrap with the exhaust tape and then an exhaust wrap. I do that because you can get the wrap much tighter.

Alright, just picked up this from Pep Boys LINK

Still think this is going to be a problem though

Withstands direct heat up to 400°F and 2000°F radiant heat
The EGT probe is obviously measuring inside the exhaust, and not the surrounding steel, so the gas in there is 1000+. No idea what the pipe temp is
