There is a reason why Vandy is the smartest school in the SEC

I don't believe this. Vandy is private and not required to make contract public. No way a coach has a buyout for more than his salary.

Why don't you believe it?

Someone has posted this over on the Rant and the thought was that it may be only for a percentage. I'd think they'd have a hard time holding him accountable for >$30 million in upgrades.

Franklin is a great coach but I just don't see Penn St or any other school paying 31 mil on top of having to pay him around a 4-5 mill salary... they would've went with another candidate if they had to be on the hook for that money... Vandy guys dont hold you breath for that new facility...

Facility is already built. The rumored range of the buyout is $10-$20 Million and likely the holdup over at PSU.

We'll all find out tomorrow morning during the public PSU compensation committee meeting on the subject.

What was Obrien's buyout agreement with PSU?... I'm sure the money received from the Texans will help offset Franklin's buyout... and I highly doubt it's anywhere close to $20 million.

I know that O'Brien's buyout was over $10 million.

I think a court would strike down a lot of that buyout if it came to that.
And now Vandy is in a position that they're stuck with a coach who wants to be somewhere else...that rarely ends well. That buyout should be negotiated down so that it hurts Penn State a little, but so that he can move on.

Well, in part, because it's coming from you and, in part, because Franklin would have to be an idiot to sign a contract like that. He's no idiot.

Obrien got his buyout reduced last year for the NFL. It was just under 7.

Two things:

1) I can't see Franklin signing a contract that puts him in a position where he's accountable for that much. If he did, he needs to fire his agent. Bobby Petrino won't even be on the hook for that much if he leaves UofL.

2) Do we even know that it's for that much? I could see maybe a percentage of that and a small one at that.

As I said before it's probably pretty easy to get out of something like that. Especially if Vandy didn't give an amount upfront. Otherwise they could build a facility worth twice what it is now and just say Franklin is accountable if he leaves.
