How many restaurants sell expensive wine but serve cheap wine?

Is your palate exquisite enough to tell the difference? Has any place in Louisiana ever had this happen?
I know I wouldn't be able to tell the difference and I am sure wine drinkers even casual could tell some older vintage vs a fresh but still

but I know for a fact that restaurants will serve cheap liquor in place of the expensive stuff, especially vodka

Our $5-12 bottles are marked up to $35-40. We get Dom Perignon for $120 and sell for $300. I wouldn't say the cheap wine is bad. It's all marketing. My fav bottle on our list right now is the Orwin Swift "Saldo" which I get for $16 and enjoy it way more than other pricier options.

If you can't taste the difference, maybe don't order the expensive stuff. Say they have a $6 glass of wine and a $10 glass of wine, but you don't have a good wine palate. Do you order the cheap or expensive glass? I'd order the cheap one because hell if I can tell the difference.

Most of the time a restaurant's more expensive bottles aren't sold by the glass so I doubt this is much of an issue.

I've seen a restaurant sell Kendall Jackson wine as their top brand for 7 dollars a glass when the bottle only retails for like 20 bucks

Flemings has a very large upper tier wine list by the glass. This was decided during restaurant development in order to attract more women clientele in a traditionally men's environment. That of the steakhouse. It's a fine list too and not meant to be a scam. I've had some good glasses then ordered a bottle. It's a great way to do it.

And above it's Orin Swift and if you are getting Saldo at $16.00 you are doing very well because that's a $21.00 wholesale bottle. It's a nice Zinfandel that I've enjoyed. If you can get your hands on one of Dave Phinney's Mercury Head do yourself a favor and spend the money and drink it. Very nice. He created Orin Swift.

I agree. I did use the qualifier "most". I don't think people have to worry about Flemming's scamming them by serving a cheaper wine than people are ordering.

I wish more would do it but you have to have some volume. I've asked at Ninos and Ruffinos for a glass of a particular and they have accommodated knowing they could sell the rest of the bottle by the glass to another table. I've even had them offer me a glass or the rest of the bottle that someone else ordered a glass from. That's a nice way to do it and tells you people are as enthusiastic as you are in trying a wine.
