Developing a thought here. What is the Disney Spectrum? Where do Disney movies fall/relate to other Disney movies?

I will include all Pixar films, but will exclude all the rest of sequels (Lion King 2, Aladdin 2, Beauty and the Beast 2, etc.). There are a lot of Disney movies; some have held up over time and some have not.

I understand that there will be some people that will be partial to the recent Pixar films, and some will be partial to the classics. And some will rate Song of the South real low. So, what is the spectrum?

Disney is a huge company with many facets. Are we just talking animated features? Or are you also including pure live action films such as Mary Poppins or the Marvel movies? What about movies released under their other brands such as Touchstone and, I believe, at one point MGM Studios? What about where they have signed agreements to be the exclusive distributor of a studio in the U.S., like the deal they signed with Studio Ghibli, maker of Japanese Anime films like Spirited Away?

see there will always be a lot of disagreement in Disney films.

Let's just look at the non-Pixar films in the Animated classics line up. Which stand out as the weakest?

First, as a reference:
Disney Movies

Now, there are many factors to the Disney Spectrum. Longevity, marketing, story, animation style, and originality really can determine which Disney movies become classics. Toy Story 1 is a classic because it was so different. Lion King is a classic due to the marketing, songs, and big names that were attached. 101 Dalmatians is a classic based on the originality of the story (being recent and not a Grimm Fairy Tale or a popular tale).

This comes about from watching Frozen and trying to determine where it falls on the Disney Spectrum.

It was forgotten because the MUCH better "An American Tale" came out at the same time, animated by an ex lead Disney animator.

The Great Mouse Detective saved Disney Animation Studios. After a string of failures, it was going to be shuttered. Roy Disney, Walt's nephew, pleaded with Michael Eisner to let him run it and keep it open. From Wikipedia:

"After the failure of the Disney animated feature film The Black Cauldron, this simpler film proved to be a success upon its initial release in 1986. As such, the new senior management of the company were convinced that their animation department was still a viable enterprise and this set the stage for the Disney Renaissance."

This is a topic people will never agree on, because your age and childhood memories will reflect your choosing.

What the frick?

All three of those are solid (I'll admit a bias for Brother Bear since it's the first movie I saw with my goddaughter).

Brother bear was pretty bad. Most of the Disney movies from 2000-2009 where pretty bad.

They didn't have the direction and story telling that they had in the 90's. Late 70's-89 was a bad period too.

I never really thought mouse detective was memorable.

What gets me is the thread is to discuss the spectrum of movies yet half the posts are people not liking MY opinion on Mouse Detective.

That's when Pixar really hit its stride, and the focus shifted to that I imagine.

@009 did have Princess and the Frog though.

Also, I reserve the right to bash you for calling it "Wrecking Ralph" and saying Emperor's New Groove was crap.

I like Great Mouse Detective, Mulan, Hercules, and Hunchback sans the dumbass gargoyles (Frollo was such a great villain). I also like Pocahontas.

And I love the "classics" and the early 90s films. Fwiw I rewatched Lion King recently and thought it was good but not GOAT worthy like a lot of people deem it to be.

My favorites are Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.
