quote:Sounds like the Old Guard is finally being snuffed out of UT. Started with Dodds, then Brown, now Jamail/McCombs. Ole Red is pissed that he and his cronies were left out of the decision making process for Mack's replacement.
No doubt Red is a joke and deserves the criticism. Without knowing, I'm going to chalk it up to some kind of senile depression mixed in with an inflated sense of importance. UT will continue to take his money, but they hope he leaves his opinions at home. I think we're really beginning to see that Dodds' absense is leaving some folks with some abandonment issues. No way would Dodds have bucked the BMD's.
It's funny that Red said he is wanted Gruden. When was the last time Gruden recruited HS talent, hired a college coaching staff, made up a gameplan???

That bizarre behavior came about when Red got wind of the Strong deal & in his dysfunctional way thought he could derail it by floating rumors of Gruden. In reality, he thought he was in a much better position to make the decision and talking about a former NFL coach who had no coaching job was relatively safe. He damn sure wasn't going mention Saban or anyone else who was currently employed.

As for Saban, while there was a contract on Sexton's desk, it was not drawn up by UT officially.
Dude, if you think that Sexton's talks with those on Texas' side was anything more than him trying to get Saban a huge raise out of Bama, then you are a fool. Saban was never going to UT, and he sure as heck wasn't going after the 1st rumor leaked by a booster. As much of a control freak as he is, there was no way he was getting in the middle of the political mess that is over in Austin, nor would any smart established HC that was already at a decent job.
Patterson's only true realistic choices were Strong and Franklin, and he chose Strong. But you can't convince the outragiously big egos of booster like Red and Jamail and some of the unrealistic fanbase that those were the only realistic choices. Now you're going to have those boosters and fans just waiting for Strong to mess up or not win a title in 2 or 3 years, so they can start this all over again. Strong better hope that Powers stays in Patterson's corner, because he may be the only one that has his back when all is said and done.

Trust me on this. Saban would not have turned down the package that the boosters put together. Also, Sexton was dealing with the boosters long after Saban got his raise & extension. And I mean up until it was known that Strong would be the man.
You can thank President Powers mostly. He was never a Saban man, and may have risked his career over this move. Time will tell.

Again, a true example of Texas arrogance. First off, that package would've had to break the $15 mil mark to even get out of Bama's reach ($10 mil sure wouldn't have done it).
Secondly if money were the only factor in a coach taking the job, then Fisher(the fact that they said he had a fickle or whatever personality is ridiculous), Malzahn, or Briles would be in Austin instead of Strong.
Lastly, you can't believe that there was a contract sitting on Saban's desk the past couple of weeks. Someone other than Powers or Patterson would've had to put it in Sexton's hands since by your own admission, neither of them wanted Saban (which is ridiculous in itself). And since they are the only ones with the authority to make the hire, then even if a booster gave Sexton a contract, that contract wouldn't have been worth the paper it was written on. I heard Bohls on Finebaum talking about this, but I would bet my house that his source is the same as every other Texas beat writer/website mod/insider's source...an out of their mind, arrogant booster. Because you know dang good and well that Powers and Patterson wouldn't have told anyone that they, nor someone else (who would've went behind their backs) gave Sexton a contract.
Again, I don't know if there is a more arrogant set of boosters/fanbase out there than Texas. It all boils down to the fact that if they could have gotten a better coach than Strong, then they would have. They had plenty of time to get who they wanted. All of the potential big time hires got a front row seat to the crazy political mess going on behind the scenes at UT, and I guarantee you that they wanted no part of it.

The irony is that yes, they have enough money to get who they want, yet they are the reason they can't get who they want

There isn't. Try living in the same state as them.

This is precisely the reason they didn't get Saban. The boosters are extremely arrogant and are allowed too much control. There was fighting between them on the terms and they never could agree on who to hire. Saban was the home run, but they were fighting about the money and what to do with Mack. They couldn't agree on anything and lost Saban as a result. They deserve it.
I firmly believe that no coach will be successful there because of this as well. The boosters are allowed too much involvement in the program and Texas is scared to force them to back off. Their greed and love of the dollar is the reason for the downfall. They won't take the risk of losing booster money. Strong will be lucky to win 10 games a year.

Interesting that the Clear Channel connection was brought up on Mike and Mike this morning. The other founder of CC? Lowery Mays '50. (A&M)
Interesting that you almost never hear a peep out of A&M's big donors (Richardson, McFerrin, Cox, Mays, Zachry, etc.). The regents, on the other hand, and the elected officials are another story.

The racism and arrogance we keep bringing up has more to do with people like Jamail and McCombs than anything else.
Texas seems to prefer their donors in the spotlight. We prefer ours to write their checks and keep their mouths shut.
Then again, I'm certain that the infamous Franchione "insider newsletter" had a lot to do with our big money donors keeping a low profile.

You are at a disadvantage because you don't have all the information that I do. Trying my best not to be condescending, but one donor was ready to put up a $17 mil real estate deal for Saban. That doesn't include his salary. And there were others ready to jump on board. The dysfunction at Texas is why Saban is still at Bama. Doesn't really matter if you believe me or not - its all academic now.

Would be a great job if you didnt have to deal with all those fricking Texans

This shite ain't over. Saban to Texas.....now hear me out.
Charlie "Definately Not HC Material" Strong is a diversion scheme. He has been "hired" under "legal" "contract". This guise allows for the Bama Nation to let their guard down. As Phyllis lies fast sleep, with visions of houndstooth dancing in her head, Saban will travel the Trail of Tears (soon to be renamed Trail of Steers). He will be assisted along this Underground Railroad by the alumni of lesser SEC programs. When he appears for his presser the following AM, it will be announced that he is the HC and Strong is his DC. They will need no OC because no team will ever score a fricking point on them again once they surmise a plan to unravel the HUNH offense. Within two years, the amateur clause will be redacted from the NCAA's rule book. UT is invited to join the NFL that very day. When Saban extends his elbows to lift his third consecutive Super Bowl trophy over his head, he ascends into the heavens to become what will be called the "Quaternary" consisting of the Father, Son, Holy Ghost, and Saban.
This is where Texas twists the script. They breed Strong and Terri to produce a super-race (known simply as 'Straben' of football coach. This newfound lineage will produce an EA Sports NCAA style monopoly on football routinely dismantling teams 100-0.
One of the best post on TD in my 4+ years.

With all of the "factual" news coming from Texas I believe you are the one and only that has it completely accurate. Yeah, that's what I believe.
Posted on 1/9/14 at 6:15 am to Big12fan
And how do you know what kind of real estate deal donor(s) we're going to setup for Saban? Did someone post it on Shaggybevo, or did Chip Brown personally post that over on OB?
I'm not sure who is worse, the dumbass beat writers/website mods/supposed insiders that put this crap out, or the dumbass fans that actually believe it.
