Due to the recent rise in healthcare costs for reasons I'm sure you are all aware of, I am wondering what are some ways you have cut those costs down?

I have heard of a few ways but I want to learn some more.

Mainly I have only been told how to save on prescriptions by ways of switching to generic drugs or other drugs within their therapeutic classes. I have been using My Covered Drugs to get most of this information but I was wondering if there was anything else similar.

I have also been told to ask doctors whether or not its safe to split pills or double dosages when having to take same medication twice a day.

One last thing, has anyone ever used a Mail-In pharmacy? I've heard they are cheaper but it seems kind of sketchy.

This is my first venture to this board so bear with me.

yes, but it can be a real pain in the arse to set up. my insurance company practically gives away the drugs but I have to get my dr to fill out paperwork to do it. And so far, that hasn't worked out for me.

Its also super convenient, as they are delivered to your doorstep.

I wouldn't do it for a controlled substance but something like heartburn meds or blood pressure drugs, its a good idea.

the best thing you can do to keep your healthcare cost low is to eat right, exercise, don't smoke and get enough sleep. Plus avoid kids, they are germ factories.

Oh definitely. I hate relying on prescriptions. Natural is the way to go, but sometimes there are things you can't avoid. Especially regarding my elderly parents

If my healthcare costs had gone up, I hadn't noticed.

Why would you get name brand when generic is available? If there's a noticeable difference your doctor would tell you, and recommend the name-brand - I've only had that happen to be once.

I lie about my income, pay the 'fine', and have an emergency fund set up, as well as relying upon family members in the medical field.

Maybe I am lying about lying? Feints within feints, my friend.

I absolutely adore being labelled a 'Gump', as if it were an insult.

You'd be surprised how much you can save by actually asking your healthcare provider how much their services cost up front. You can negotiate some, but not all, costs.

I fired a laboratory because they were charging me triple what another lab was charging for the same tests.

What are you talking about? Healthcare spending increases have pretty dramatically declined recently.

quote:

The United States’ $2.8 trillion health-care bill grew at a slower rate than the economy did during 2012, as newly released federal data marked the fourth-consecutive year in which medical spending increased more slowly than during any time since the government started measuring it half a century ago.

It's amazing how hard it is to even find out sometimes.

The problem with US healthcare in a nutshell...so few people do comparison shopping that it's actually commercially viable to get away with this nonsense.

I couldn't stand them, they kept messing up the auto refills. Finally I had enough when they lost my medication in the mail (it has a tracing number on it and it showed the medication delivered). Thank God we have an awesome mail lady- she fixed the problem fast! But had she never found it, the pharmacy said I was SOL and would not get my copay back, but they could put in a request for another order to be filled which would take up to 3wks if approved and I would be charged the full amount (not copay). Forget that. Never going through that again

I attempted this when I broke my finger. It's hard to describe the reaction I would get on the phone, almost as if I had described powered flight to a medieval serf

You're giving stats from 2012. A lot has gone to shite since then.

The majority of the ACA law had not yet been implemented. The impact was felt much more substantially in 2013; particularly in the last few months, as January employer-based insurance renewals came up, and the individual deadline approached.

A major part of the law has still not been implemented because king obama, thought it would be too much for us to take in the arse all at once. So the president (yes, he gets lowercase) decided to change a part of a law as he saw fit.

One of the early measures that pissed me off was no longer being able to use my HSA account to purchase over-the-counter medication. Many of the previously-prescription sinus meds have become OTC. So, I can't use the money in a healthcare-specific bank account to purchase medicine because the ACA law now says I can't? That's some ironic shite. Allegra-D was cheaper in prescription form than it is OTC...and I could get a month's worth back then (not a 24-pack). Not to mention that I now have to show ID sign a federal agreement statement to promise that I'm not using it to make meth.

We're all so fricked.

A question for the doctor's who operate a private practice...

How much cost could be eliminated from a basic visit to a general practitioner if the patient paid cash?

Would bypassing all required paperwork and filing procedures (and the personnel required to perform those tasks) reduce the actual price of a visit?

Spending will be slowing. Gov't ain't paying for much of anything anymore. RACS(gov't auditors) are killing the Hospitals, our local one's have been hit for about $80,000, of which they just held current payments(most from care given 2 years ago). Hospitals are fixing to start closing doors. Lay-offs, nursing wages will all have to drop. Its getting bad...

Wait, so government spending will be going down? Aren't we supposed to be celebrating?

Not if you are in Healthcare, or trying to keep Community Hospitals open. But for Gov't spending, Yep, its going to spend a lot less, at the expense of Medicare patients...just the way its heading...
