Someone kicked in my back door this morning and stole all of our jewelry and my S&W .40. The .40 lives in my top drawer, under various things - scarf, gloves, junk - a place that is not obvious to anyone by just opening the drawer, but gives me fast access if I need it.

I have two kids, though both are young, and I do not think either could ever work the slide and chamber a round. But because of them, I typically keep both magazines in a separate drawer. I have a trigger lock that came with the gun, that I use to use religiously, but more recently, I started just leaving gun and ammo separate. Lock is sitting next to gun, or was before they took it.

They did not find the two mags in the other drawer, and so they have the gun, but no mags. Makes me feel a little better, But I am sick to my stomach thinking that my gun could be used to kill someone, something that could have been avoided by just putting a lock on the trigger.

I had also been contemplating a fingerprint safe, but never got around to it. Just like I never ordered and installed the security cameras I had been thinking about.

This. If you are a homeowner (and in some cases a renter) a claim to your insurance company can be made. I realize this is of little comfort to you but still worth noting. Good luck.

Report it stolen. It's likely that the perp is going to try to sell the gun at a pawn shop

I'd be more worried about the fact that someone just broke into my house. Especially if children are involved. ADT brotha

Cops were called asap, all reports filed. Another point - as a responsible gun owner, I should have had the serial number recorded. I didn't. I had the receipt from when I bought it, but lost it a few years ago, thought on various occasions "I need to record the serial number", but never did it.

Going to get an alarm, new back door with a better deadbolt than the previous one, and some cameras. Also will be selling the house and moving asap. (We've been wanting to move for a while, this is just the icing on the cake. Neighborhood is going to shite and it's time to get out).

Also, guys, check your homeowners policy to make sure you have a rider and itemization for jewelry and that you aren't on the default limits. We're taking a huge hit on some valuable and sentimental jewelry.

My wife's stolen handgun was recovered within a week of theft, but it was not cross referenced to us for over 10 years. We have it though.

good point. I guess they wouldn't even top cut the lock, just the trigger guard.

I'm also pissed. The idea of some ghetto-dweller in my house going through my shite makes my blood boil. Especially since they had a 1 hour window between my wife and baby coming and going.

Happened on the werst bank, jefferson parish. This is my third occurrence in one year. About a year ago, one car was left unlocked, broken into. 3 weeks ago, both of our cars were broken into, though both had been locked. The inhabitants of the nearby ghetto have begun to figure out that a short ride away is a non-ghetto where people have nice shite.

Personal article floater. Very cheap considering the coverage you get. You can list your guns on a PF as well.

Jewelry and guns are usually limited for theft on your homeowners policy.

I have most of mine in a gun safe now, but will not lock up every gun I have, ever. I cannot talk an intruder into letting me get to my safe to defend my family, home, and self should they decide to come inside unwelcome.

I also have a 32# mini dachshund that does not care for my friends, much less strangers. Intruders don't stand a chance with him around.

If someone really wants something they are going to get it. Even if you used either the trigger lock or the fingerprint safe, the gun would still be stolen and accessible. Outside of a bolted in safe, or a really good hiding place, any other measures are simply to protect from accidents occasioned by small children.

Yeah, I lock up the guns to keep my kids safe. I let the big boy handle the intruders. If anything, he will surely buy me enough time to get into the safe. The intruder would most likely be dead by the time I get to him, though.
