Gators before a hard freeze

After not seeing gators in the harbor out back since September, tonight there were four gators across the water by the woods. Do gators leave the brush and seek deep water for a hard freeze?
I always thought they hibernated in the marsh when it was cold. I live on the edge of Bayou Sauvage NWR in eastern Orleans parish.

Well dat splains it; but they don't have much further south to swim from here!

They often surface but can't even move. I was on top of one with the back of my longtail a couple years ago. Moror running and prop spinning inches above his head... didn't flinch. I didn't even know he was there for a little bit
