Is it because of the bottle selection? Asking this because the draft selection isn't up to par with the praise this place gets.

I love the neighborhood feel to it and it is a great bar.

Its the bottle selection, right?

It was mentioned last week that the tap selection has really been lacking the last month or so.

Not sure if it is a temporary or permanent thing.

Most of the year they quite a bit of beer you aren't getting at any other bar in the state. And for beer mavens, their special events are off the charts.
The bourbon and scotch selections upstairs are pretty good.
Hey, but if it isn't your thing, that is ok too

There is also that thing where they are anal about changing kegs if not fresh, cleaning lines regularly, and having bartenders who know a shite ton about beer.

I said it is a great bar. Used to go years ago before I started to really drink good beer and in the past few years the place has been talked up as the best beer bar on the planet. Been twice recently and wasn't that impressed. I guess my expectations were too high and out of reach. I was banking on the draft selection to be out of this world. It isnt

Like I said though it is a great bar.

It's the best beer bar in the state. We don't have much, so this makes us happy.

It is bottle selection

Good bar for beer. Wish it wasn't so dingy. Not a place to go after a date

The selection has been really down the last few weeks.

A Pub > Hay Merchant IMO

I never see anyone here say anything of the sort. People say it's the best beer bar in Louisiana, which I agree with .. mostly based on their special release events and every month or so they'll have a couple things on tap that you won't see anywhere else. And yes, they have been a little weak in their tap selection over the past couple months. Only place close to it in consistent great selection is probably The Cove.

Best in the city no doubt.

Disagree about the second part, though. If she can't appreciate Avenue I probably wont have much in common with her. Probably wouldn't take her there on a first date, but I also am typically gonna hide my beer snobbery on a first date anyway. Unless it ends at my place. Then the boxes of beer everywhere are gonna give me away.

Pretty good? It's one of the best bourbon selections in the country, and the prices are some of the most reasonable I've ever seen.

They do have a fantastic bottle selection.

I'm looking at the list right now and seeing great things I never/rarely see in BR like:

Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break DeCicco's Version (amazing beer IMO)
Oude Gueuze Tilquin
Struise Blackberry Black Albert
Struise Black Damnation III Black Mes
De Molen Hel & Verdoemenis (Aged in Wild Turkey Barrels

This is along with a nice selection of locals and other American craft beer that is available. So I don't see a damn thing wrong with the current draft list. And a lot of times it is better than this. Nice variety of styles from all over. They usually work hard to get whatever one-offs or good seasonals come from the breweries that distribute here.

Also, Polly is really dedicated to properly handling and serving of the the beer. Everything comes in the right glassware with appropriately sized pours. Lines are cleaned out every two weeks at a minimum (see other places can even tell you how often their lines are cleaned). They have a great draft system such that beer doesn't have to travel far to get from the keg to your glass.

Their special events are really where they shine. Did you see the list of events and lineup of beers that were served during ACBW last year? It was out of this world. The grand tasting alone has an amazing selection of beers new and aged. On Zwanze Day she always has way more loon goodies available than other places around the country. She maintains a cellar that allows her to offer aged beers for special events or other random times. I haven't been one special event that wasn't properly organized or unpleasant.

I've only been to a handful. The Zwanze Days have been well managed as well as the grand tasting during ACBW. I've talked to people who went to some of the weeknight events during ACBW as well as NYE, and haven't heard complaints.

What issues have you had?

My personal well traveled beer experts tell me that, while there are better taverns in certain parts of the country, the AP is pretty damned good. Certainly the best in Louisiana. And, yes, the special events/releases are supposed to be "whassup".

I plan on being an expert within the next couple of months and I'll settle this shite once and for all.
