I know it's been discussed already but the field looked amazing before the game today and is still in very very good shape.

No reason to bring in new grass. Not sure how hard it is to replace the major paint on the field but IMO there is no need to replace the entire field.

It's amazing.

IMO, the SC/UCLA game with both teams in darks in a noon kick on this grass is one of the prettiest things in sports.

Most of it is probably due to the paint. Painting over just doesn't look good.

Look at some of the NFL stadiums that hosted bowl games. The painted over parts just looked bad.

Oh, and just because I like to give some props to the turf program here at Miss State, I'll mention again that the grass used was bred at MSU back in the 1980s.

Here's a blog post about replacing the field back in 2009.

The Rose Bowl Stadium already got a new field in early December in preparation for the New Years Day game. But that field won’t do for the championship game to be played less than a week later at the same place. Because of the pregame, game, halftime show, and postgame festivities, the field is expected to take a beating. Not to mention the gallons of paint used for team and corporate logos. A fresh field is a must—and fast.

They just overlay it. Not enough time for them to pull this field up and put the new one down

Yep.

They call it BOBSod, as well, out on the West Coast because it was used in the Bank One Ballpark (BOB).

The breeder at MSU now said that the company that purchased the grass changed the name from MS Choice to Bullseye, because MS Choice sounded like a cut of beef.

That's what they did when LSU played Penn State in the Cap One bowl. Grass didn't have time to take plus lots of rain is what resulted in that mess.

Don't understand why they have to relay the field.

I thought it was called Bullseye out west and Choice around here.

Anyway I know a lot of people, including Miss. State, are going away from it because you can't keep 419 out of it.

You go through the MSU turf program?

I'm currently pursuing my masters degree in turfgrass science at State.

I think BOBSod is more of a slang term used by turf people. Seems like it's more popular out west than around here. I think Arizona has a lot of it.

I know it gets a LOT of thatch. Provides great cushion for sports.

They have some of MS Choice out in the rose garden at our research farm. That grass feels so good to walk on.

You in the industry?

I'm sure we know some of the same people. I graduated in turf from LSU a couple years ago

Very nice.

I was biology (lot of plant biology) at Bama for undergrad. So it was a bit of a shift, but I love it.

What are you up to now, if you don't mind me asking?

I got ya. My research is with putting greens and more related to golf course. So I don't deal as much with sports fields.

At least we are still talking about grass.
