I have gone turkey hunting twice in my life, but am going to have a good bit of time this spring, and I am wanting to give it a go. What do I need to get started. I know I need a couple of calls, what would you suggest for beginners? What about decoys? Other definite needs? Thanks

Depending on where you hunt a Thermocell could be a must for warding off mosquitos and such.

Lynch's world champion box call is pretty good for beginning mostly idiot proof call.

Pretty Boy decoy was the best investment I've ever made as far as turkey hunting goes.

I would get some easy to use calls...

A good box call, it's killed more birds than any other call. Lynch, Primos, Pittman all make good ones.

A good friction call weather it's slate, aluminum, crystal, get one and learn to use it (not hard)

A few mouth calls (don't have to know how to use them but if you can figure it out no movement and can put more emotion in it)

A decent vest with a back rest that will allow you to sit in the open with no tree to lean against.

Thermacell

A decoy (they help but they can also hurt, not a requirement IMO)

Get you a good slate call that you are comfortable and consistent with. Even moreso, make sure you get a good striker.

Gloves, hen decoy, thermacell, face mask

I'd start with a quality turkey vest and the most comfortable boots you can find. Those two are must haves and (other than a gun) are going to be your biggest expense. Calls are relatively inexpensive and unless I'm hunting fields (which I rarely do) I don't bother with decoys.

1st get a good friction call and good striker
I learned with a Lynch slate call still have it and that was in the 80's

2 a good box call don't forget chaulk
I prefer mouth calls, they take a lot of practice and i can make all the calls with them even gobble

a good vest, and practice,practice,practice

Spend the money getting yourself to places that have a lot of turkeys this spring. Go on a semi-guided hunt for some suicidal Rios. You can kill plenty turkeys in your deer camo with a $3 call if you know what you are doing. It's not nearly about the stuff in your pockets as much as it is the stuff between your ears. Find someone who kills a lot of turkeys and take him to dinner to chat. You'll get a better return on your investment from that dinner than going to academy and buying a basket full of gadgets.
