A little backstory
Grew up in the woods and loved it, dad tried to make us hunt when we were little and we didn't like it (boring). Liked rabbit hunting, etc where you could shoot more.
I'm 31 now and since having my own son (18 mos) I took back up deer hunting in order to teach him the ways in case it interests him one day. Anyways I've enjoyed the hell out of it since I've gotten older, just the peace of sitting back there, it's relaxing.
We'll I've been borrowing my dads Marlin 336 .35, I love the size and portability of the rifle, so I'm looking at the same style but in the .308. Most of our shots are in wooded areas no further than 100 yds, but I'd like the capability of doing more if we set some stands up on the roads. I'd like to get my own and quit bumming my dad's guns, though he has an arsenal basically.
I guess I'm asking is what's the OTB recs, .35 or .308. Or something different...?
Still searching for that first buck though, I'm not
HUGE on deer meat (like sausage) so I'm not taking a doe. Of course I saw 5 this evening. Thanks for the help guys!

You can't go wrong with the 308 caliber, IMO.
That is unless you opt for the 243 Winchester.

30-06......best deer round known to man.

.308 will be a lighter rifle with a shorter action so faster follow up shots.

.243 is great for young hunters, killed my first few deer with it. Moved up to a .270 at around 13 or so

My bad thought you were looking for a gun for your son when he starts hunting. For you if recommend either the .270 or 30-06

Browning BLR is a Lever Action avaiable in .308.

If you want a lever action.
The Browning BLR comes in .308, 7-08, 30-06 and many others.

RE,
Congrats to you for re-experiencing your hunting pleasure. Sounds like you'll be enjoying deer hunting a lot more this time around.
I'll admit that the 35 Rem is a deer killing machine and is very underrated amongst today's hi-tech, more modern deer hunting rounds. The first deer I ever killed w/ a Thompson Center Contender handgun was killed w/ a 35 Remington. I killed a 1/2 dozen or so deer w/ that barrel before getting a different for an antelope hunt. In addition, the Marlin 336 is great for the type of hunting you described. Having said that, I agree that you'll have more flexibility for other types of hunting if you get a rifle chambered in 308 Win. Sure, there are a bunch of "differents" as well, but I'd go w/ the 308 Win. As far as a specific gun, there are a bunch of options. I'd suggest a bolt action (more flexible and generally more accurate). If looking to spend money for an "entry level" gun, I'd suggest the Marlin bolt action, Ruger American and possibly the Savage Axis and Mossberg. The next step up in expense brings the rest of the Savage line and the Remington Model 700. I've had good results as well w/ Browning and Winchester. The Tikka gets a lot of love here, but I've never shot one. Get a decent 2-7X or 3-9X scope, Weaver one piece scope base, Burris Signature Z-Rings and some 150 gr ammo and you're ready to go kill some deer.
And truth be told, I bet your dad cracks a small smile behind your back every time you walk out the door w/ the old 35.
