Proposed: new playoff bracketing that seeds based on record.

Eliminate the structure whereby Division Champs get higher seeds. Seed every team according to W/L record. This could mean that a Division Champ would miss the playoffs, but, would eliminate many 8-8 or 7-9 Division Champs, too.
Eliminate the NFL Conference "divide" in the playoff bracketing, such that, just like the regular season, the playoffs include games between NFC and AFC teams. As such, teams from the same NFL Conference could meet in the SuperBowl.
Precedent? NCAA football when two teams from the same SEC Conference Division met for the BCS National Championship.
Rational thoughts, analysis and opinions are requested. Thanks.

I like the divisions b/c it keeps some good rivalries in tact.
I'm 100% on board with seeding based on record. This is the second time in four years the Saints have to visit a team with a worse record.

I don't think Division champs should miss the playoffs, but I also don't think 8-7-1 teams should be hosting playoff games either.

This is best. Still need to keep AFC vs NFC brackets. But seeding and home field should go to better records.

At the very least teams without winning records should NOT be in the playoffs. Use the next highest seeded team in the case of Seattle a couple of years ago.

I still like the division format and providing teams with the incentive of winning the division = playoffs even if it means an 8-8 champ gets in over a 11-5 non-division winner. With everybody playing intra-division games yesterday, there was a lot of high drama. If you take away that incentive and you essentially do away with divisons. With that you would lose some great, long standing, intra-division rivalries.
However, I don't think you should get a home game and higher seed just because you won the division. Once the playoff teams are set seed them according to record. If that means that 2 teams from the NFC West are #1 and #2 then so be it.

Support. It sucks that teams with a better record get screwed by playing in a division with another great team while an 8-7-1 team in a meh division gets a home game.

Agreed , keep the same format of division winners and wildcard teams getting in but seed them based on performance

Divisions and Division Champs would be retained. Under the new system, however, a Division Champ with a weak W/L record could miss the playoffs.

Are you in favor of a 7-9 Division Champ making the playoffs while a 11-5 team misses the playoffs?

what's even more fricked up is green bay gets home field advantage with 4 seed, still picks 21st in draft and SF is at 29 as it currently is situated.

I guess division champs would still get in but an inferior overall record to that of a wild card would mean the wild card team is seeded higher.

That would be better for the NBA but not the NFL.

Yes, of course, that's the proposal.
Why are some people so wedded to the notion that even a weak Division Champ must be included in the playoff tournament? The Divisional structure of the NFL is somewhat traditional, but, does not date to the dawn of the NFL. For many years, there were NO divisions in the NFL.
