This is a really tough call. I'll wait until after I see Her to answer.
But after watching The Master, the answer is definitely not "Leo and it's not close."

Pretty close. Joaquin got robbed for not getting the Gladiator/Walk The Line oscar
Leo was excellent in Departed/Aviator. Blood Diamond I wasn't too high on.

I really can't stand Joaquin because of Walk the Line. He in no way embodied Johnny Cash. Cash was a leader, brash, constantly full of himself, arrogant, a confident son of a bitch. Phoenix turned him into a mealy mouthed pussy. I thought in several ways it was a similar character to what he played in Gladiator. He always seems to play his roles as a weaker, follower of a man, it bothers me. Especially when it isnt the character.
Gotta go with Leo.

yeah, I kind of agree. I didnt think his Johnny Cash was awful, but it was just okay.
He was good in the Gladiator, but nothing incredible...

Both are great actors. Both are good in basically every role they play. But I don't think Phoenix has had a single performance as good as DiCaprio's in The Departed or The Aviator. Those two roles put Leo over the top for me.

Watch The Master, movie was slow but Phoenix was outstanding and he deserved the Oscar. I like Leo, but Phoenix trumped him with The Master,

Both equally good to me.
Joaquin in Gladiator was just a great performance that I appreciate more every time I see it.
And as much as the movie is made fun of now I thought Leo held his own against the giant shadow cast by the Titanic.

Leo is consistently solid, but I've yet to see him in a role where I thought he was great. Joaquin was great in Walk the Line and The Master, and a much better villain in Gladiator than anything Leo has done.
