I know he's always been pretty awesome but I really like his recent work. Inception, Dark Knight, and Man of Steel are exceptional pieces of work.

I'd say Michael Giacchino is better.

Two different styles of music. Williams uses a full orchestra every single time. Where as Zimmer uses anything he can get his hands on. Zimmer is 100x more versatile, but Williams has the trophies. That being said Zimmer has been screwed on many occasions. Same thing happened to Ennio Morricone.

ETA: Also Zimmer was never trained. He learned his craft by being a gofer for different studios and composers.

Christopher Drake's score just may be better than Zimmer and Williams.

It's Superman's score and captures Superman perfectly

Christopher Drake's score for All Star Superman.

He uses computers to create his sound whereas Williams actually writes sheet music and composes an orchestra. Also...Zimmer goes through phases where he borrows similar motifs from his past scores, incorporating them into his music.

wanna know why he's the best? Watch The Holiday. It's a guilty pleasure movie for me and I honestly think it's because of his score.

Zimmer not winning Best Score for Inception is a joke. Time alone should've won an Oscar.

Who can blame him? His past scores are so fricking awesome, I'd recycle them too!

I would certainly say that Zimmer has dominated the movie scene for the last decade+

While Zimmer makes some interesting music, and some wonderful classic scores, his latest stuff, while incredibly bombastic, has really undermined the point of a film score. He's had some bad influence on film scoring LATELY.

see I think that's a good thing. He takes over action scenes that are typically filled with horseshite dialogue.

While I'm not familiar with the breadth of all the scores listed, I've always viewed The Thin Red Line score as the best I've ever heard. It was absolutely essential to the mood of the film and I saw an interview where one of the actors said Malick would blast the soundtrack during between time during the shooting so the actors could understand the film's tone and mood.

Several of the pieces on that soundtrack will give you chills.

His Spaghetti Western stuff is amazing.

For Zimmer, I find myself listening to The Last Samurai music a lot. He has made some great stuff, but I wouldn't call him my favorite.

Danny Elfman will always be my favorite. Batman, Simpsons, Beetlejuice, etc.
