do you mean Alex? He was kidnapped by his "aunt". He was retarded. He knew that the girls were there but couldn't comprehend why.

Just watched this. Just thought I'd echo the sentiment that it was pretty outstanding. Great performances by Gyllenhaal and Jackman.

Between this and End of Watch, 2nd year in a row Gyllenhaal has impressed in an underrated film.

Just watched last night. Not only was that maybe Gyllenhaal's but every other actor in it had a great performance. Especially David Dastmalchian. That guy played a great creepy guy.

"They only cried when I left them"

Paul Dano's face when he says that gave me the chills.

Also, the crazy bitch is also the mom from the Fighter

Movie was very good. Hugh Jackman killed it, did a great job getting away from his Wolverine persona. Kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

spoilers....

When JG visited that lady who watched the video every day of her son that went missing, the first thought that came into my head was "that's Alex!". Anyone else pick up on this overly obvious hint? Just seemed way too random to not play a major part in the overall plot.

Despite what others have said about JG, I thought his performance was dry and lackluster.

Watched this last night and loved it. In laws told me the ending sucked, but I thought it was great.

**Spoilers**

Ending with Gyllenhall's eyes gradually becoming more focused on the car in response to the whistle. He finally locks on and it goes to black. Though it was perfect. I don't think Alex is retarded, just think he was completely fricked from being abducted at such a young age. I'm pretty sure he was headed to a psych ward for a few years being that he knew about the kidnappings but was too emotionally unstable to stop them.

Jackman's torture room was exactly how many of us father's see ourselves responding to a situation like he was in. He knew Alex knew where the girls were. I liked the contrast of the two fathers and the extent they were willing to go. Howard didn't have it in him to do the kidnapping, but also couldn't let him go. I thought the scene where he starts to take him out the wall and eventually stops at his wife's pleading was really good stuff. Overall one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty obvious.

Spoilers... And really not trying to be an a-hole just my honest opinion.

I was pretty excited to watch this and even convinced my friends to give it a shot with me.... Huge mistake. It was bad IMO. No depth to the story other than "the war against God" which was only sprinkled in once or twice. There was no backstory to the killings or anything that would explain the mazes in the book relating to the kidnappings. Obviously I hated it and was embarrassed for suggesting it.

didn't really know much about this movie, but gave it a shot at Red Box and it was pretty awesome.

I am a JG fan though, that's the only reason I even noticed it.

SPOILERS

The war against God was contrived on the base that the family was originally overly religious. Son died of cancer, family turned into "demons" because of their grief and in their devout faith could not find reasoning for their tragedy. Thus, the kidnapping and killing in their attempts to turn more people into them in their war.

The maze was explained to be impossible. In the scene which Joy was found it showed the woman giving the children the finish the maze and you can go home bit. The maze was unsolvable, therefore was just feeding the children false hope. If you want to nitpick, it's not explained why they felt the need to torture the children/keep them alive rather than just kill them and dump them from the get go.

The imposter who escaped obviously remembered all that and obsessed over it due to his mental instability.

The snakes seemed like they may have provided some of the poison. But also since they believed themselves to be demons, it would make sense to identify and use the original representation of evil in the Christianity creation story.

I enjoyed the movie. As someone else put, it was fricking intense. A lot of the clues to the plot were sprinkled in throughout. But I never was able to think outside of the current scenes due to the high amounts of what-the-fricking-fricks.

I haven't looked through this entire thread, on purpose, but I'm watching that movie now. I'm about 3/4 of the way through it.

This show is intense. I've already teared up a few times.

Gyllenhaal and Jackman are impressive to say the least.

I loved Jackman and Gyllenhaal in it. I wasn't surprised that

SPOILERS

Paul Dano wasn't the killer, but it was a great film and had a lot of twists towards the end (especially the ending scene).
