Both AP and Coaches have the same top 8, but slightly different order...I will use AP rankings.
5 Conference Champions:
Florida State (ACC)
Auburn (SEC)
Michigan State (Big Ten)
Baylor (Big 12)
Stanford (Pac-12)
3 At-large
Alabama
Ohio State
South Carolina
Seedings (using AP top 8):
1. Florida State
2. Auburn
3. Alabama
4. Michigan State
5. Baylor
6. Ohio State
7. Stanford
8. South Carolina
My friends, all these teams are good. This represents teams from all parts of the country. This is why the 8-team playoff will probably happen in 5-10 years, if not sooner. While the 4-team playoff is a great advancement, it still leaves out at least one champion from a power conference.
First round of the 8-team playoff will be at the higher seed's home stadium. Lower seed will be guaranteed some percentage of tickets for its traveling fans. This % used will be consistent across all first round games.
First round matchups:
South Carolina at Florida State
Stanford at Auburn
Ohio State at Alabama
Baylor at Michigan State
The big question will be where the semifinals are played. The bowls will fight hard to have the games. The schools will argue that the bowls aren't needed. Logistically, it will be difficult to ask thousands of fans to travel long distances and pay big money to a neutral site for the semifinals and also a neutral site for the championship game.
There are NCAA meetings in January to discuss having a Division 4 for football only, which would entail the 5 power conferences breaking off from the rest of Division 1. This will allow the big schools to have more coaches on staff, allow them to feed the players more meals per day, allow them to pay a monthly stipend to the players, etc...these are things that can't happen currently since the small schools of Division 1 can't afford it. When this happens, you will see plans released for an 8-team playoff as described above.

I'm sure people will like this, but I have no problem with UCF getting a BCS bowl. Their only loss was to South Carolina by a field goal. And, we've seen no-name underdogs win BCS games over powerhouses before.
I guess my point is I don't think it's fair to leave UCF out of this playoff bracket.

seriously great post. I do like the 8 team format. the question comes in around how you choose the three wild card teams, but I don't think anyone could argue with those three teams aside from maybe having MIssouri instead of S. Carolina.
I think the SEC needs to get their scheduling figured out to make sure teams don't skate by without playing 3 or 4 of the top teams in the conference while others play them all

Keep the BCS, and use the Top 4 to determine a 4 team playoff. 8 is too many, IMO.

This system just ruined some of the best games of the year we've seen.

If it's a committee choosing, no way they would let the SEC have 3 teams.

Ryno, from what I was told, you may see a further radical push to kick out the schools from Big 5 conferences that don't invest in their program like the Alabama's and Texas's do.
I was told that some schools are pushing for six 8-team conferences...48 schools that invest similarly in their football program. The thinking is that schools like Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Baylor, etc. don't deserve to be playing football with the big boys because they don't bring as much revenue to the table yet the get the same cut as everyone else.
Also, when the big schools finally do break off, don't expect them to play schools from the lower divisions...

Way too many.

So if Texas had beaten Baylor, a mediocre 9-3 Texas team that got destroyed by BYU, Ok State, and Ole Miss would be playing for a National title?

16 games total for the SEC champ playing in the NC game. Thats A LOT!

I think 8 is a lot. Id love it but really think 6 with 1&2 getting bye is the way it should go. frick AQ. take the 6 best teams

I think the top 4 teams should get to host a home game in an 8 team playoff. It gives them the benefit for finishing top 4 and greatly reduces travel costs for ~85% of both fanbases.

needs to be 6 with two byes or 10 with 2 play in games, imo
