Does anyone know the reason for this?

Southern California - 9-4
Colorado State - 7-6

Both had a 13 game regular season. Neither team was in a conference championship and both are in a bowl game.

They played @ Hawaii. NCAA allows teams the extra home game to make up for the cost to travel to Hawaii

It's why Alabama played 13 games in 2002 and 2003

they scheduled those because they couldn't play in bowl games

Don't the teams that have to travel there for the conference games each year schedule the extra game? Or is it just that they can if they want to?
