Start up Accounting Software

I'm thinking of starting up a small food related manufacturing business. I'm trying to nail down start up costs for my business plan right now and I'm pricing accounting software. Other than Quickbooks, what can you recommend me?

Quickbooks is the answer why would you look at anything else? You could look at Peachtree or Sage but really in your case Quickbooks

There is a reason QuickBooks dominates the market. Not everyone can afford someone with an accounting background to perform the bookkeeping for their small business.

This.

Plus your accountant will almost certainly be able to read Quickbook files directly instead of cumbersome reports.

I loathe Quickbooks, but it's about the cheapest option out there.

If you lack an accounting background, avoid Peachtree.

Quickbooks data files are actually a pain in the ass. They're in some proprietary format (rather than SQL) that requires some special ODBC driver.

Still, if you're not an accountant-type and want something inexpensive that's thorough and guides you through everything you need to do, Quickbooks is your answer.

Damn you. You're not supposed to agree with me.

Because of its market dominance just about all other financial software packages have QuickBooks compatibility built into them.

Good to know that you zeroed upon quickbooks. Just wanted to ask you, did you opt for hosted quickbooks or the desktop version? I had sent a query to a company called onthenetoffice and they really convinced me with hosted quickbooks benefits over traditional one. But I would like to know some real time user experience as I am in a similar situation like you.

I loathe QuickBooks online! A client of mine had it and it's difficult to navigate through and print out certain reports.

Regular QB is no problem. I actually enjoy working in it.
