Petersen, who has turned down other job offers but he is ready for a new challenge, the source said.
Washington was previously to interview Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier on Thursday and scheduled to meet Friday with Petersen, a source said.
The Huskies are seeking a replacement for Steve Sarkisian, who left for USC.
Petersen, who is 92-12 at Boise State since 2006, was a candidate for the Huskies job in 2009 before Washington hired Sarkisian. He also had been linked to openings at USC and UCLA.
Boise State slipped to an 8-4 mark this season, including a loss to Washington.
Nussmeier was the offensive coordinator at Washington under Sarkisian from 2009 to 2011 before being lured away by Nick Saban. In Nussmeier's two seasons at Alabama, the Crimson Tide have averaged almost 39 points a game.
On Thursday, Missouri coach Gary Pinkel withdrew his name from consideration. The former Washington assistant told "Mike and Mike" on ESPN Radio, "I'm a Missouri Tiger, and I'm going to stay a Missouri Tiger."

Karma is beautiful. Sark shite on UW and UW made possibly the best coaching hire of the year.
UW has a lot of natural recruiting advantages and may be primed to take advantage of Oregon post-Chip Kelly and Stanford post-David Shaw (I think he takes an NFL gig in next two years.
UW is historically the premier program in the PNW. Only recently has oregon really taken over. But UW has a better in-state recruiting base and still hits Cali hard for recruits. They can offer a top notch education and the chance to live in Seattle which beats Eugene every day of the week.
UW has also started making a bigger investment into their program as seen with the recent $200 million + stadium renovation.
While it may not be a USC type job, it is easily a top 5 job west of the Rockies.
Plus, boise's subpar season may be writing on the wall that sustaining the magic in Boise, Id is going to be difficult.

Plus, at least UW has a pretty big medical ctr. for his kid. Good for UW and good for CP.

It's always good when the West Coast evil empire gets spurned.

This had to have something to do with Boise underwhelming the past few years.
Nothing against UW, I'm just sort of surprised he turned down the big jobs he did over the years just to end up at a 2nd tier Pac-12 school that's 2nd fiddle in its own city. To each his own I guess...
On a side note, Pac-12 has a ton of good coaches. Shaw, Rich Rod, Leach, Peterson, Mora, and Graham are all names and/or really good coaches. Oddly enough, Oregon might have the weakest coach/name...
