What should I be most concerned with when buying a used boat (other than whether it floats/runs)?

Condition of the fiberglass, especially around the transom area. Wiring - make sure all switches, gauges, breakers and lights work.

Compression on the motor is a big one also...

Wiring , live wells , pumps . And hidden engine problems that were patched long enough to get rid of it

Wiring can drive you crazy for years.

If you don't know crap about a boat, hire a surveyor. That or bring someone that knows something about boats.
Also, motors now can be checked thru a computer at a dealership. That cost around $100. Best insurance one can buy when buying a used boat.

Yes! This one is often overlooked.

Really what make of boat. High dollar boats have at lease a 10 year warranty. Age plays into a big factor too! Once a boat hits 10 years old and you want to have it insured, insurance companies don't like to insure it.

There's a reason it's being sold.

I've bought 3 used bass boats and always pretty much give it hell when I'm trying it . Run it as hard as it'll go . You'd be surprised how many I've tried that wouldn't pass a torture test

I think biggest thing is a sea trial. Run it hard as rayvegas said, hammer down, take tight turns etc.
I also like to take a look at the general condition of boat as well as everything else of the sellers. says alot about how somethign was kept up if everything at his house is well kept and he has maintenance records, etc.

The 10% sales tax. For example, on a $20000 boat, you will pay $2000 in taxes.
You can fix a lot of wires for $2000.

Compression on the motor is a big one also...
agree get a compression test all cylinders should be within 10% of each other and compression good
check the transom and Then the damn wiring

IF it looks like it has been cared for it most likely has, IF it looks like it has been left outside and rough- that is a big question
Take your time I looked for months, found a boat with <50 hours- guy bought it, could not afford notes, I save a bundle, he got off the hook for the loan- that was 7 years ago- oh and the boat still looks like the day I bought it
