Has there ever been such a lack of? There's not even hot names I can think of anymore. I wouldn't want to be a top program looking for a coach right now.

Who's the top potential name right now.. A guy like Deruyter?

How do you define "up and coming" coaches? Younger guys at mid major type programs?

Its become a media driven frenzy. One year goes by and a whole new hot list comes out, last years guys are forgotten.

For instance, Bill O'Brien was a hot name after last year, and he hasn't been mentioned at all for potential openings. IMO he is the next great hire for a big program.

I define it as a coach I'd be excited about my program hiring. Realitistically, you're not going to pull a coach from a top program. So yeah, usually a guy that's at a mid tier program or a coordinator.

If Coach Hud is the cream of the crop then yeah, the current talent pool fricking sucks.

I can't understand why Dantonio is not mentioned often for elite program jobs. He is probably too boring for most, but his style of play and tough defense would translate to any big time program.

If Miles ever left LSU, I'd want LSU to target Dantonio or O'Brien.

I don't follow the top assistants that much since most top programs want a guy with HC experience.

For guys that haven't been head coaches yet, Kirby Smart and Scott Frost are getting a lot of buzz.

I like Dantonio and wanted him for our job last year, but his health problems scare me a bit, and his offenses at MSU have been downright anemic. Granted, that can be fixed by the right OC hire, but he's also no spring chicken (turns 58 in March).

I'm actually surprised no one in the SEC jumped on him after the 2010 or 2011 seasons when he won 11 games both years. I think he'd have been a good hire for Ole Miss. Heck, he'd have been a great get for Tennessee if they'd have cut the cord on Dooley a year earlier.

I think the bloom has come off of the Kirby Smart rose, mostly because it's looking more and more like there's a hush-hush gentleman's agreement that he succeeds Saban unless the Georgia job comes open.

I'm really surprised Nebraska didn't can Pelini and hire Scott Frost.

Oregon offense, was a part of the entire Chip Kelly era. I think he's seen as another Kliff Kingsbury.

Plus, the guy has played/worked under who's who of coaches. Played under Bill Walsh, Tom Osborne and Bill Parcells and coached under Chip Kelly.

57 with a heart attack and has been loyal to msu. Also, I other than S. Carolina or Ohio State, I don't see him being interested in any other gig.

As for MSU, I'd like to see where Pat Narduzzi, the DC, ends up. Hope he does better than a MAC school.

Here is one that might be a darkhorse candidate. Vince Kehres of DIII superpower Mount Union (OH). He is in his 1st season as head coach at Mount Union after his father, the legendary Larry Kehres stepped down. He was on the staff for 13 seasons (8 as D coordinator) and was as a player for 4. He has been a part of 10 out of 11 National Championships at Mount Union. Mount Union is currently 12-0 and ranked #1 in the country in NCAA DIII.

It would be a very risky move, but this guy comes from a championship background and knows how to win. It would be interesting if somebody offered him, if he would ever leave Mount Union? If he wins 2-3 championships in the next 5 years or so, would he be tempted to test the waters?

Kyle Flood - 6 seasons as OL coach with Rutgers, first seasons as HC at Rutgers with 9-1 record
Darrell Hazell - 6 seasons as Ohio St. WR/arse HC, 2nd year as HC at Kent St with 15-8 record, 10-1 this season
Sonny Dykes - 3 seasons as OC/QB coach at Arizona, 3rd season at La Tech with record of 22-14, 9-2 this season
Charlie Strong - 8 seasons as DC, interim HC, co-DC, 3rd season at Louisville with record of 23-13, 9-1 this season

I don't think Pelini is out of the woods yet; I could see Nebraska firing him after their bowl.

That's so late in the game, though.

Tennessee was fricked in terms of hiring a coach after Kiffin left partially because he didn't bolt for USC until early January after their bowl.

Same deal for Michigan -- didn't fire Rich Rod until after the Gator Bowl and then had to settle for Hoke because they couldn't get Harbaugh or Miles.

If you're gonna get rid of your coach and try to land a decent name, you better do it before the bowls start or you're generally out of luck.

Eh, Harbaugh was going to be an NFL coach anyway.
