I was just wondering? I had a friend who was rambling on about Tennessee possibly making a bowl game anyway. I think they have about 0% chance of that happening.

a team with less than 6 wins is ineligible unless they win their conference.

Your friend doesn't know the rules.

happened a year or two ago I believe. But I think they were 6-7 at the time (UCLA after the Pac 12 championship game)

So UT can finish with 8 losses instead of 7?

If all the shitty low teams played shittier than they normally do, and bowls were empty, I guess it's possible. But how would they be chosen.

Pretty sure that is false.

Now, first consideration will go to 6-6 teams with a win against any FCS teams, regardless of scholarships, then 6-6 teams with two wins against FCS schools.

A team that finishes 6-7 and loses in a conference championship would be next, followed by 6-7 teams that normally play a 13-team schedule, such as Hawaii and its home opponents.

Then bowls could then invite FCS teams making the move to FBS, if they have at least a 6-6 record.

Finally, a team with a top-five APR that finishes 5-7 could be selected.

Yes... kind of... UNT finished the season 5-6 in 2001 but were 5-1 in conference so they went to the New Orleans Bowl.

You can read about it here. Basically you have to win six games unless there are crazy circumstances LINK

No that is the rule.

In the 2001 New Orleans Bowl, North Texas didn't have six wins (they started 0-5 and finished 5-6). But they were eligible because they won the Sun Belt Conference.

That's irrelevant to the point I was making.

A team with less than 6 wins can now play in a bowl game even if they don't win their conference.

It can happen but Tennessee has zero shot b/c there will be enough 6 win teams to fill out all the slots this year.

Last I checked a few will likely get left out.

If 5-7 teams start making a bowl, it's time to reconsider this bowl thing.

Yep. And Troy beat them the last game of the year to send them bowling with a losing record.
