What is a safe firearm to have at home for protection?

I would like to get a handgun that I or my wife can use. Nothing with a lot of recoil but something that can protect the family. I have two 12 year olds to consider also.

I like a revolver in .357 magnum, you can shoot .38's in it which will have much less recoil. Also, a pump shotgun is a good choice, a youth model in 20 gauge and everybody can use it. An AR-15 in .223 makes a good home defense rifle. Those are my three choices, you are going to get a shite ton more options as well.

Me personally, I'd get a .357 revolver and load it with .38's.
Wheel guns are so much easier for new bees to deal with, and that counts when it's needs to.

Any firearm is a safe firearm if you don't act like an idiot around it.

A good single action revolver with a safety. Which ever caliber your wife thinks she can handle. Safe around kids as you can get.

One that is readily accessible, functional, loaded, and that you are proficient with.
You could have a robocop handcannon that wouldn't do you any good if the above criteria are not met.

My mom has a 20ga Remington 870 loaded with buckshot. Hers has an 18.5 in barrel and she can manage the recoil of the 20ga easily. Buckshot are like firing 9 shots each time you pull the trigger. It 's quite the attention getter.

I also suggest 20ga buckshot for home defense. 12ga buckshot is supposed to be the best home defense round. And a 20ga will kill just as well. I keep my gfs 20ga loaded with buckshot for when I'm not home.

Another vote for a youth model 20 gauge loaded with 4B buckshot....... that's like 27 bb slightly larger than a bb gun bb flying at you. Get a pump. Remington model 870

.380 with snake loads, (you don't want to shoot through the walls). I also really like the youth 20g semi auto or pump. My preference is the semi auto. As for ammo, I would suggest #6 lead...is deadly at 20 yds.

Thanks to Boot, Zac, and Yat.
Joe, there is a lot of good advice and some not so good advice here.
1. A single action revolver would not be the best home defense handgun. The hammer MUST be back for a shot to be fired (easy to forget) and the trigger is extremely light in SA mode.
2. A 380 with snake shot would also be a bad choice. You will barely get any penetration and the rifled barrel will spin the shot as it leaves the barrel, causing a HUGE and erratic shot pattern.
